Subject: To lift or not to lift... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota 4X4, and am thinking
about lifting her a bit. I have asked some people
and two have advised against it because they said
that the dakotas are too front heavy... Any
thoughts? and what are some cost effective options?
thanks

Message: Too front heavy? As in what...you hit the brakes hard and it will go end over end? HA! I'm not fully grasping what they are spewing. Sounds like someone who doesn't want your rig looking better than theirs, so they are making sh!t up to keep you from modifying it.
Easiest/ cheapest lifts:
Step 1. Adust your torsion bars up.
Jack up the front end adjust the bars to raise the front end...not all the way to the bumpstops(!), but closer than they are now. You should easily (safely) get 1 - 1 1/2" lift in the front. This will make your rig set level.
Step 2. Install a body lift.
Performance Accessories 2" body lift comes to mind.
It requires less work than the 3" to install and the gaps in the fenderwells are less noticable/ easier to cover.
Step 3. If you want a bit more and wish to stay on the cheap, add a set of 2" lift blocks to the rear axle. All it takes is replacing the 'U' bolts with longer ones and slipping the blocks in place.
Now, if you just plain want more height and are willing to drop some $ green $, then I suggest you look for a Rancho or Tough Country lift. I don't believe Rancho makes theirs anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't find one. I found a Trailmaster kit for my `95 by just surfing.
I did the torsion bars (years ago, with no problems) followed with a body lift and wheels, then added the suspension lift and eventually installed heavier load rear springs. Needed nerf bars to get in, but I'm not complaning!
Careful. Once you start going up...you will want to keep going!
Good luck
