Subject: More Torque from 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I just bought a used 2002 QC 4x4 with the 4.7 and 5 speed manual. The truck is great but when towing or driving into a strong headwind I am finding I want more power down low in the 2000rpm range. Are there any easy upgrades for more pulling power like a computer flash or cam install? Once 3000rpm hits the truck pulls great, the problem is that highway speeds are only in the 2000rpm range up here.
I am planning a lift and 33's soon so the extra torque would be handy.
Thanks,

Message: Wow. If you think you want more power down low in the 2000rpm range when towing or driving into a strong headwind NOW, you're gonna need 4.56:1 differential ratio (front & rear) just to regain the power loss caused by the 33" tires.
Try lower gear in those conditions. the 4.7 engine HP and torque don't really show up until about 3000 RPM, then torque drops off quickly. See 4.7L HP/torque curves here.

Message: I do realize towing with 33's will have it's limits. I just remember the torquer cams from the older 5.7 chevy and was wondering if there is such an option for the 4.7 or is there is a different computer reflash. Also driving around the city my rpm's are usually under 2500rpm. I do agree that once the 4.7 hits 3000 it really wakes up. I guess I'm just used to the grunt of the older American V8's.
Any experience with the Superchips programmer, 22hp and 20 ft-lbs isn't bad for the price.
