So get this, I have a few minutes to kill so I drop by the Dodge dealarshipin town and park next to the new 2002 Ram. I check it out and as usual, some little Sales rep is one me.so you want to test it out? anyways...
He has a 97, 318, a few goodies with the motor and exhaust..and a 3" body lift. Cool. Its a nice ride. He just ordered new R/T Rims for it (112 bucks dealar cost/wheel!!!!). SO he tells me he is planning on 35x12.5's on the 8 inch R/T rim and is going to be able to run it.
I wasnt about to tell him flat out it couldnt be done.. but geezz.... I have some serious doubts about it all.
What do you all think?
IF he DOES get it to run (should be this week) I will get some photos of this thing.

I still think he smoked too much crack...:)

With 8 in rims, he should only go up to 11.50's. Going up to 12.50's is risky. I he wants beed locks, then OK. But not a simple 8in rim can take them. You were right to tell him not to. He might just bottom out the 97 318 Dak. Not a pretty picture. But I would love to see these picts if you get em. Thanks

Nothing wrong with running 12.50's on 8 inch rims. I have been doing it for 11 years, alot of the time at 12 to 15 psi off road without beadlocks. Never had a problem. (I wouldnt advise jumping the truck or anything though at that pressure.) Just like running 11.50's is fine on 7 inch wide rims. I wouldnt go any narrower than that on either though.

Since the tire manufacturers say 8½ minimum for a 12.50... I wouldn't recommend mounting 12.50s on 8" rims... whether or not it has been done.

Just because you have been doing it doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it...

I am with dak, I have always heard that 10.50's are about the largest tire you can mount on a 7in rim safely. So that means 11.50's on 8in rims and 12.50's on 10in rims. I am sure you can mount just about any tire you want on any rim you want, but that does not make it safe. Talk to you guys later.

Just to chime in, I ran 33 12.50's on my 15x8 rims on my wrangler and I beat the heck out of that so much more then I would ever do to my truck. We are taking about everynight for about a year (I went to night school in highschool my senior year so I went out with a Toyota after class every night for a year straight) not to mention everything else I went through, on the weekends. Not even a flat tire much less anything else. Go BFG's!

The manufacturers say that for legal reasons. Some idiot will go flying around with 10 psi in them, pop a bead, and then wreck. Crawling through the woods, at the beach, etc with that low of a pressure is one thing. Doing donuts and 65 mph at that pressure is another. At 35 psi, what I normally run, its perfectly fine. An 8.5 inch rim only gives you 1/4 inch more on either side of the tire. Thats not enough to make a diff at all. Every major 4x4 magazine will tell you its ok to run them. Out west rock crawling they recommend 8 inch rims because it protects the edge of the rim better than a 10 inch. If you arent concerned about dinging the edges of the rims then they say run 10s. I am not new to this as I have been doing it all my life. If there was ANY danger or anything wrong with it then it would have showed itself by now. Dont take my word for it, call a major off road company like 4 Wheel parts and ask them. I worked for them for a little while and 33x12.50's on 15x8s were teh #1 combination that was sold on a daily basis. I dont want anyone to get the wrong idea, no flames here, just stating what I know from first hand experience.

Hawkeye, I am fairly new to the off road seen and have heard many stories about tire wheel combos. I have a 15x7 in rim. Are you saying that I could run a 31x11.50, if I could find it, on my 15x7 rim? I trust your knowledge in this stuff. I have read dozens of your responses and posts on this site. So if you say it will work, I will go for that next tire time around. How much more fender space would I need though? Well, thanks for the info all of you. This site is #1...
Have a nice day.

Both viper and myself were running 32x11.50's in the factory 15x7 rims. No problem. As for if they will fit, remember we have Gen III trucks. If I remember correctly, yours is a Gen I? Not sure about sizes for those trucks. 31x11.50's or 32x11.50's will work on a 7 inch wide rim though.

Thanks Hawkeye. I know you have been it this business for a while now so I trust your judgement. I am seriously thinking about going with Super Swamper's 30x11.50 SX. Any comments or past expierences? I would loose a little bit of ground clearence but I want wider tires. Not a huge move from 10.50's to 11.50's but It getting closer to my 12.50 I am striving for. You guys have a good one.

You have to think of it in terms that you will be gaining 4 inches of flotation. That can make a big diff off road. Not to mention that its 4 more inches of rubber on the road. No personal experience with the Swampers but I do know a few people with the Super Swamper Radial SSR's and they love them both on and off road.

Hawk, OK you got me lost now. You said I would gain 4in of off road flotation. If I went up from a 10.50 to an 11.50 tire, would that only be 2in total gain? Maybe I am missing something here but that is what I thought.
Tonight, I ran up town to MCd's for quick dinner. On the way out I took off out of the parking lot and turned, did not like the top heavy feeling I got. I am now thinking of getting some 1.5-2 in wheel spacers to wided my stance 4 in. Have you or anyone else used these things? I would get them from Aim Ind. who custom makes them to order. 40 bucks a pop! But it would look better and be more stable I think. These are the kind you bolt to your hub and then your wheel bolts it the spacer. Any comments anyone? What about wheel clearence? Thanks for all the help. Talk to you soon.

I have seen a lot of places adamantly say not to use spacers on 4x4's. Not sure of the reasons.

By going from a 10.50 to an 11.50, you get an inch wider tire. You have 4 tires. Thats 4 mores inches total. The weight of your truck is evenly divided over those 4 inches.

With my new rims I pushed the stance out just over 4". I have the same amount of Tire patch contact, but the stance is definalty more stable. A new set of rims will not only look better, but be safer. As Hawk stated, wheel sapcers are not something that many off-roaders are too comfortable with.

About the wheel spacers, I have already installed new rims. American Racing Nitro 15x7. Should have got the 15x8. But it widened my stance quite a bit. But it simply is not enough. With the fender flairs, I want my tires to evenly match the outside of the truck. I hava also heard the spacers are not good on 4x4 but on my 2wd? My truck is my daily driver and it sees some dirt and mud but onthing serious. I only have a 3.9L pre-Mag! Not the strongest of engines. But what I am questioning is how will the increased width of the wheels effect my wheel clearance. Its close now with 31 1050's. So I thought maybe go with a 30x 11.50 and the spacers. Have heard the spacers help with clearence. Well tell me what you all think. To space or not to space, that is the question.
Thanks, Joe E.

As a former owner of an R/T, aren't the rims 17x9's? I have yet to see a tire company make 35's in 17 inch rims. Sounds like the dealer sales guy was full of the s word. Good price on the rims though. I had one stolen on my R/T and the dealer wanted $500 a rim back in 99'.

I could be mistaken though.

I miss my R/T but the QC 4x4 is much more fun. I now leave the speed to my Mustang.
