I've chiselled the heads clean off the rivets.

What's the trick for knocking the rivets out?

I've had the surrounding metal red-hot with the torch before laying on the hammer and punch........ they won't budge.

Thanks in advance

Air hammer is the only way I've ever done them and haven't had a problem yet. Probably done 25-30 sets now on Dakotas and Durangos.

U better have a good drill bit to drill out a hardened steel rivet without damaging the control arm. If you elongate the holes that the rivets come out of the new ball joint might not line up right. Drilling them out is a last resort at best. You also don't want to heat them too much, any time you heat steel you take some of the temper out of the steel making it more brittle. A brittle upper control arm isn't a good thing to have if you should get into an accident or hit a big pothole.
