Message: You have a bad cat no doubt about it get that cat changed and the smell will go away. It's not good to run like that very long the cat will eventually breakup inside and it is possible though rare that the material can get in your muffler and clog your exaust "Not Good" but dont panic I have only seen this one time. I'm sure it's the cat though.

Message: Dude, its the cat. couple other here had that problem. Best thing to do, cut it out totally and put in a straight pipe. Youll get HP from it and it will sound better. I did it and will never regret it.

Message: It may be the cat but it's not because the cat is bad. All unleaded cars have that smell.

Message: Dan, i worked at a car shop for a year, it's the catalytic converter. Just because it's pretty new doesn't mean it won't go bad, i had the stock one go bad on my truck after 500 miles, and that was the factory cat!
And as far as disconnecting the air pump...don't do that. You really shouldn't disconnect things if you don't know what you are doin. Plus, air only gets into the cat through the tail pipe, and during acceleration and idle almost zero air actually enters into the pipe, if it did, you wouldn't pass smog. Smog tests measure how much air there is in an exhaust system, and there is supposed to be none.
So re-connect everything and buy a new cat or straight pipe it. But remember, if you straight pipe it you won't pass smog, and if you put your current cat on you won't pass smog cause any smog guy will fail it knowing that the cat is bad from the smell, so u have to get a new cat whether you like it or not, it's just your choice whether you put it on now or later for a smog test.

Message: Dan.. do I sence some negativity.. Dude he's just trying to help you out.. You think he's getting any $$ from telling you you need to buy a new cat?
Also what air pump are you talking about?
Try re-connecting it.. see if that helps the problem.. it'll probably take a while to completely go away if that's what caused the problem .. but it's less expensive then getting a hi-flow cat.
Lighten up.. we're trying to help.

Message: Don't run out an get a new cat just yet. Yes The cat is probably where the smell is coming from but the cat may be fine. Many times a "rich" air fuel mixture will not let the cat "light".The rich mixture keeps the exhaust temps too low. That is, the cat won't get hot enough to do it's job. Try to check the air fuel ratio if you have access to that type of equipment. If you have made any modifications that would make the truck run rich, try reversing them and see if the smell goes away. BTW, the air pump disconnect could make your truck run rich.

Arthur, dude, I have to call you on this one. Tell the truth, did you just make this stuff up? That is total nonsense. Sorry man, not trying to flame but someone might actually believe this stuff your saying. Maybe your trying to say something else and your choice of words has confused me. How exactly do you define the word "air"?

Message: You probably ran leaded gas thru it. Leaded gas (or the cat got REALLY hot from something else)burns too hot and melts away the platinum coating over the catalyst balls, exposing sulfur as well as other chemicals...thats what you smell, sulfur.
