Subject: 03 Body Lift and Tires IP: Logged
Message: I have an 03 V8 SLT 4x4 Dakota. I really want to put a body lift on my truck, along with bigger tires. I found a PA 3" body lift for my truck. I was wondering if putting a body lift causes any alignment issues? I have heard from a mechanic that they did.
If everything goes well, I will be putting on the body lift. I was wondering what can be the biggest tire I can put on without altering anything? I have heard that some people are putting 33x12.5 tires on...
I don't really want to change re-index the torsion bars, because I have heard that doing so, would only be changed back to OEM spects when taking the truck to an alignment shop. Is this true also? Thanks!

Message: I have an '04 with the 3" PA kit. There is no problem with alignment. I know I could fit 33's no problem. But I don't know about the 12.5. I'm running 285/75R16's with plenty of room. I've got to tell you though if I had to do it again I would get the suspension lift for a a 2002. You can get it to work by swapping out the brakes for with a 2002. The other thing with these dakotas that sucks is the independant front suspension. I am currently debating whether I should kick out the cash for a solid axle ( I do love my Dakota ) or just sell it and by a 2500 series.

Message: The only problem I have with getting a suspension lift is the cost. Like $1300 for the lift, labor, and the price to change the brakes over. So I'm probably looking at well over $2000 to get 3 inches. I found a body lift for $219 with shipping, and I would not have any labor costs...

Message: Body lifts will not cause any problems or changes with the alignment at all. 33x12.50s will fit you may have to crank the torsion bars up a hair to get them to clear at full turn but maybee not. And you can ask the alignment shop to not mess with the ride height while doing the alignment, its not a necessary adjustment. If you have 16in wheels you will deffinately be able to fit 33s just 285/75/16 (33x11.50). If you have 16in wheels and still want 12.50 wide then you can get 305/70/16s, however the wider the tire the more work you will have to do to get it to fit.

Message: Does re-indexing the torsion bars mean the same thing as cranking the bars?
What about the width of the stock 16in. wheel? Does that matter?

Message: To an extent yes reindexing and "cranking" or adjusting the torsion bars is accomplishing the same thing. To reindex the bars you have to take them out install different keys and put them back in, cranking the bars a little accomplishes the same exact thing and its far less work.

Message: The stock 16in wheels will fit the 285/75s no problem, they will fit the 305/70s too, they just look a little funny and will wear in the center of the tread faster then they should.

Message: I put a PA 3 inch body lift on my 1999 dakota, but i also bought new wheels with 3 1/2 inch back setting. So now i am running 33/12.5/15.
I also turned my torsion bars about 80% so i could get a prerunner look. If you turn your torsoin bars you should get your truck realigned though...... Oh and my tires do rub only when i crank the wheel hard but i can handle it. your choice

Message: Is cranking the torsion bars the same as re-indexing the keys? I have found information on both, but I don't know the difference.
Also, you say that once you crank the torsion bars, you should get an alignment. Does the shop put the truck back to factory specs? I mean, do they "uncrank" the torsion bars, or what?

Message: No cranking the torsion bars and reindexing the bars is not the same exact thing, but it accomplishes the same exact thing. When you crank the torsion bars up a little all you are doing is tightening the adjuster bolt up to increase the ride height a little, you can generally get 2in of lift this way. When you reindex the torsion bar you must remove the bar itself and install a new key on it then reinstall the bar to get more lift. All the reindexed keys do is turn the bar, same as cranking up on the adjuster bolt. Really unless you have a lot of extra weight on the front of your truck or your torsion bars are worn slam out you don't need the keys, you will be perfectly fine with just a little cranking.
Yes you should get an alignment after cranking the torsion bars and yes you can request the shop not adjust the ride height as I said above its not an essential adjustment, meaning they can still do the alignment and get the caster, camber, and toe angles into specs, however it might not be as close to perfect as it could be at stock ride height.

Message: Depends on how much you crank them up. If you go too far up with them, yes it will go through ball joints left and right. If you don't have it aligned after you crank them then it will also wear the tires unevenly.
