Subject: Wheel Spacers and such... IP: Logged
Message: I have a 03 Dakota QC but I want to widden my stance by an 1" to 2".I just got some new tires today and I was not able to get the ones I wanted because I do not have my body lift installed yet. Can I use spacers or will that hurt my truck in the long run?

Message: Well u will put more of a load on your wheel studs so make sure they are in good shape also it will wear the wheel bearings faster. alot faster! I wouldnt go out anymore then 1 inch. Thats still alot. Get some offset rims or just a wider tire

Message: i have a 2001 2wd dak. I have 1" 1/2" spacers on each side so I'm a total 3" wider in the front. I only have the front dun because it's a prerunner with wider fiberglass fender's and it fills them nicely. It also allows you to run wider tires without rubbing the frame. However I have had a wheel bearing fail on the freeeway....so do at your own risk. I now just change my wheel bearings every time I change my brakes and I have no problems. I hit the desert pretty hard and have jumped it a lot with the spacers on there, I feel confertable with them.

Message: doesn't changing the wheel bearings get spendy, if its like my 90 they are a non serviceable bearing and the whole hubs costs like $220

Message: yes, mine are also a nonservicable bearing. i dont remember how much they cost individually though because I bought pads and rotors at the same time. I work at an auto shop so I get wholesale pricing which cuts a nice percentage out.
Reason I think thinks i'ts worth it is because I had my driver's side wheel bearing fail on the 5 freeway in california(if you've been on it you know that it's an 8 lane monster of a freeway) and the bearing just separated leaving the tire/wheel, rotor, hub, caliper, part of my brake line all free to eject from the truck droping me on the spindle.(remember i have 2wd) I happened to be in the #1 lane going 70 or so, then i had to drive across three lanes in nightime traffic to reach the shoulder.(the brake lines lost all pressure and my pedal went to the florr) I was grinding spindle across the freeway leaving a nice firework show. A city bur ran over my tire and was able to drag it off the freeway when it got lodged underneeth. A nice chunk of my eagle alloy was missing and the tire was shredded. BUT i got my spacer back!!and now i just change the wheel bearings more often...cuz id rather not drive the threewheeled dak from hell again. cost me a nice chunk of change. But really I like the way it transforms the truck. with the stiffer springs from the fabtech kit and a three inch wider stance. this thing handles like a dream. Its a std cab with fiberglass fenders and is pretty agile for a prerunner, as i still have the swaybar connected. So to sum it up,Even after the near death experience, i choose to run them because they really do make that much of a difference...
but i would never recommend it.

Message: Still going to hurt the wheel bearings. The thicker the spacer the more load and wear u will put on the wheel bearings and the faster they will fail. Rear bearings are cheaper but a pain to change since we have the old style c-clip diff. Plus make sure your wheel studs are in good shape extra load will be put on those as well. Aswell as your axle. Should hold tho no problems

Message: hey thanks for letting me know! Do you think 4.5" backspacing will be good enough for tight cornering? I dont know if I asked but do you think a 9.25" R/T rearend w/94,000 miles is worth $450. I just want to know before I purchase it tomorrow.

Message: I don't know if I would say widening the track of your TRUCK 2" would make it good enough for tight cornering. Sure it would make it alittle more stable so it would be better in the turns. But, if your off road wheeling your truck and decide to install a lift and taller tires you should be looking at how wide your stance is as well. Example: Install a 3" suspension lift, a 3" body lift and 4" taller tires. You've just raised the truck 8" from the original height. I would hope one would widen the stance with wider tires and less backspacing in the wheels to maintain some stability. Most people with 4X4's do not widen the stance as much as they lift the truck so some more instability is to be expected. As far as the 9.25" R/T axle, I do not know what one is really worth, but I thought I would remind you if you have a 4WD that the 2WD trucks have the axle on top of the springs which means you would have to install new perches on top of the axle. Hope this helps and wasn't a bunch of junk you already knew.

Message: Thanks for the comment Moser. Right now I have a 2wd QC. I was looking at MB's Gunner 16" rim. here is the link:

I think they look pretty cool but I dont know how good this company is.

Message: If u want a better handling truck i would suggest going with a lower profile tire as their is less tire flex. Nicer handling harsher ride. Also upgrade your sway bars and if u dont have one in the back put one in. Also make sure your ball joints are tight. The higher u get your truck up there with a body lift the more unstable it will be come as higher center of gravity. As for that axle With how many miles are on it u may have to rebuild the LSD in it and the bearings will be half shot. I would put that money into your 8.25 axle. They will handle anything u throw at them if u build them right
