Subject: cranking my torsion bars IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 2wd dakota, I need help on cranking my torsion bars. What do i need to do to turn them to gain my 2 inches in the front to clear my 32s. I am putting shackles on the back for the 2 inches there. But the front is the more difficult part. Need Help any suggestions?

Message: Well if you find your torsion bars on your 2wd I'll be amazed. Fitting those 32's I'll be amazed too because some guys have rubbing with 32's on a 4x4. Your front suspension are coils not torsion bars.

Message: You'll be sorry. I cranked mine and after 10 months - guess what, new ball joint time. I know it was from cranking them, because just prior to doing that I replaced all 4 of them new because of the recall. Wore the tires terribly bad and caused a tear in one cv boot and I don't off road at all. Only lifted mine 1.5 inches. I realize some people claim to have no problems, but I must be one of the few that did. These trucks are famous for having weak front ends - don't test it.

Message: That's funny - I raised mine almost 2", 5 years ago, and despite the ocasional weight of the plow too - I've never had any suspension damage or torn CV boots. Sure you didn't catch the boot on a branch or something ? If your tires wore badly, you have other problems - mine wear perfectly even. Some trucks do seem to have more front end problems than others - saw a QC in my freinds shop getting its third set of ball joints, ate the stockers, then ate a set with zerk fittings too. That was at stock height. Don't think we can blame all your problems on the lift when you look at my experience...

Message: Yup, most can gainup to around 2" in the front.
Good idea to get it aligned afterwards.

Message: I have a 99 Dakota Sport Ext. and I don't have the $1400 for a suspension lift and then get tires and rims. But I am going to get the 3" BL for it. So I can Crank the torsion Bars and add an extra 2" plus the BL? What do I do about the back?

Message: Yup, you could do both - to even out the rear you could also use lift blocks, helper springs, air bags, or Roadmaster Active Suspension like I did. They have a web site if you want to check it out - helps support some extra weight too, without making the ride quite as stiff as helper springs.

Message: I only raised my T-bars cuz it sagged so much in the front. No probs so far after 9 months but I probably should go in for an alignment.

Message: Cranked mine about 2 months after a got it and that was 2 1/2 years ago. No probs. Just like adam I wanted to take out the front end sag. 43,000 miles later no problems whatsoever. Mine is a 04, which missed the whole recall debacle. And I did get an alignment a couple months after. About time for new tires though
What do you guys think of general grapplers A/T?

Message: Yeah an alignment is VERY important after doing this. Cranking the t-bars is gonna cause your camber to go a little positive and it'll round off your tires outside edge. I found that the slightest positive camber on these trucks will do a job on your tires really quick.

Geez, you guys. Get under your trucks once in a while and look at what's under there.
