Subject: 3.90 4.10 or 4.56 IP: Logged
Message: I am still in a quandry over gears,my average trip is 3-4 hrs hiway, then 1-2 hrs offroad,no daily drving with this truck at all.I dont want to go blasting down the freeway at 3k rpm in 5th gear but i need some power to push the 32" super swampers, which measure the same height as my buddies 33"BFG Mudders. So i would like some rpm input from someone with 3.90 and 4.10 and 4.56 with a similer setup....my truck is loaded down and heavy and i am going to pull a trailer with about 1500 lbs,and i am looking for opinions on the various gears.

Message: I was in the similar situation. I couldn’t decide between 4.11 and 4,56. I have an ATrans in a 2002 QC with a 4.7V8. I used the gear calculator on the Accuauotparts web site. The actual rpm from the calculator is within 100rpms. This helped me decide and I went with the 4.56 in anticipation of 35s one day. Now I’m cruising at about 2400rpms at 70mph in OD. Off it screams at 3k. Check it out. Good luck

Message: Yeah i saw your post in the performance sect, and also did the calc on the gears and it came out higher on my 5 speed manual, also i will stick with 32s so i am leaning to 410s but not sure yet.i like the idea of cruising at 2100 rpm with the 390s in 5th.

Message: For what it's worth, I was in the same quandry, I went with the 4:56, no regrets! My LT285/75/16 MT's are just a shade taller than 32". I will be honest, highway mileage is about the same if I baby it, around town mileage has gone down a bunch, but I can't help from using and feeling these gears, if you know what I mean.

Message: Oh i hear ya alright but then again i dont do any around town driving its all highway mixed in with a few miles of brutal offroading,so i am leaning to 410 but i dont want to have to do this twice it costs some bucks

Message: Bucket, you may not have the choice of 4.56 gears, I don't recall anyone making 4.56 gears for your front diff. The lowest I've ever seen for the 7.25" was 4.10 unless someone released lower gears recently.

Message: Well Walt thats good to know although i always thought 4.56 was more or less for an around town vehicle or one with alot bigger tires, but if i go 4.10 which is how im leaning im hoping to stay below 2350 rpm at 70.if i can do that im happy.
