Subject: 04 QC w/ 33" MT/R's Pics IP: Logged
Message: Just got my new MT/R's on the Dakota, thought I'd share some pics. It's a 2004 QC, 3" PA body lift, 305/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's. These pics should help anyone thinking about getting 33" tires. The tires rub pretty bad, I plan on cranking the torsion bars up about an inch this weekend and doing some minor trimming. Should solve the problem.
Let me know what you guys think. The link below should take you to my page on www.cardomain.com

Message: Craig,
The tires rub from both the height and the width. With a little more lift (torsion cranking) I think it will solve most of the rubbing. The front tires rub when turning into the vehicle, not away from the vehicle (if that makes sense).
Tires are definitely louder, but not that bad. If the radio is on, you probably won't know the difference. The big difference is feeling the tread grab the road.
I have the 3.55 gear ratio. Definitely see a difference is speed and power, but when I need it and hit the gas, the dodge V8 still gets the job done. I think you just need to get used to the new feeling and power with the tires.

Message: 305/70/16 is a basically a 33X12.00" tire. With the stock wheels you can't go any wider than 10.50" or you will rub. Many 4X4 Daks run 32X11.50s with minor rubbing at full lock.
Remember a bodylift or cranking the torsion bars have no effect on how wide of a tire you can run.

Message: I don't exactly agree with you comment that "a bodylift or cranking the torsion bars have no effect on how wide of a tire you can run. " because my rubbing is mainly occurring from the outside of the bumber, if you raise the vehicle, less of the tire will rub because the tire archs backwards due to it's round nature.
At the center of the tire, it is 33" wide, as you go higher up it becomes less and less (obviously), therefore if the truck is mounted higher up, then it acts as if it is only 32" or 31" in diameter, thus not being as close to the bumber. But the width does cause the majority of the rubbing, just clarifying that the height has an impact.

You are partially right, but with the stock wheels anything wider than 10.50" is going to rub at full lock on the frame. The only way to change this would be to change to wheels with a different backspacing.
I am just speaking from experience and after reading about a 1000 posts from members with 11.50" wide tires that all claim they rub on the frame at full lock. Forget about the fenders, they can be trimmed, it is the frame that is your enemy, and a no amount of lift will effect the frame rubbing.
Right now my truck is stock with a 2" torsion crank. After all my research I am planning on running 265/75/16 which equates to approx. 32"X10.50", there shouldn't be a trouble with those.

Message: I put 265/75/16 BFG MTs and they kick a$$. No road noise at all and they handle really awesome off road. I went hunting last week and hit this pretty steep climb and didn't even need to hit it to 4X they're great in desert sand also. Not to mention they look sweet nice and nobby with that tsl. Little rubbing but just move your entire bumper out about an inch or so. pop the hood and there are 4 bolts just loosen they and hone out the holes move it forward and your done!

Message: Well I'm running right now 285/75/16 on American racing Baja wheels with 4.5 BS as opposed to stock 5.5. They only rubbed at a very tiny spot on the inside driver side wheel well. I cut about an inch of plastic in the very back corner that dips in the wheel well and it no longer rubs and you can't even tell. Almost everybody who has a 3" BL runs either 285/75/16 (33x11.5) or 305/70/16 (33x12.5)

Message: Cranked up the torsion bars tonight. 4 full turns got me 1" of lift. Rubbing seemed to decrease dramatically. I'll know more after driving it for a few days. If it still rubs on the bumper I might just move the bumper out like some of you guys have done instead of trimming. I would like to kick the tires out a little with spacers, but I think that would just add more rubbing on the bumper (less on the frame though).
The ride actually seems better now that I cranked the torsion bars.

Message: FYI, I'm running 305/70/16's BFG AT K/O's on my '04 Dakota 2WD. I have 3" B/L and coil spacers in front. Had to trim rear of the wheel wells and the bumber a little, but no rubbing on frame with American Racing Baja rims.

Message: Does anyone know if 15" wheels will fit on a 04 4x4 quad cab that originally came with sixteens? I tried to fit some that had a 4 and 3/4" back spacing but they wouldn't work, they hit my calipers. I don't want spacers and don't want to grind the calipers down. I will get sixteens but I am unsure of what backspacing to get on the wheel, I know I have 5.5" inch on my factory 16s but if I got to a 5" backspacing will it clear the caliper even more?
