Subject: Frozen Torsion Bars!!! IP: Logged
Message: I tried to lift the front of my 1998 dodge dakota V8 4X4 up to level it out, because it looks to much like a 2wd! I tried to crank up the torsion bars and the bolt wouldn't move up or down. I tried to spray some chain lube on the bolts and that didn't work. Has anyone had this problem? Any sugestions for what i should do? Thanks

Message: Spray some PB Blaster on it. If that doesn't work, it'll snap off.

Message: Dumb question - did you release the tension on the bars by jacking up the front end first? You won't turn the bolts if the front end is on the ground. They are very tough even with the weight off. And you want to tighten the bolts further to raise the truck.

Message: Sort of, the FSM specifically states that the torsion bars should be adjusted while the front wheels are on the ground, after jouncing the vehicle to settle the suspension. This insures you get accurate measurements. Though more difficult than when the front tires are raised, it is the correct way. I've done it many times with a good 6-point socket and a good size breaker bar (your not suppose to use an impact).
Ric, you can try raising the front to break them loose, like Jack said, but the actual adjustment should be done with the wheels on the ground. BTW, I've never heard of them freezing up but it is possible. I would just hose them with some PB Blaster and them muscle them with a good size breaker bar (sometimes sliding a pipe over the end of the bar will help you get better leverage). The only bolts I ever had trouble with were the two cab bolts, right behind the front wheels, while installing body lifts. Those always seemed to be a pain to break loose. The torsion bar anchor bolts just required some muscle and leverage.

Message: Def. start with the PB blast. then reblast prior to cranking. Like Walt said, you shouldn't have any problem with a little leverage. Try starting them with the front end off the ground to help break them free, but the adjustments should be made with the truck on the ground.
