Subject: body lift + tube steps=new bolts IP: Logged
Message: Just a little info I learned. After putting a 3in body lift on my 99 Dak I decided to also give it some chrome step bars as well. Needless to say the bolts supplied with the step kit weren't gonna be long enough due to the lift. I figured the step wouldn't really take up a lot of that bolt so the ones supplied with the lift should be long enough. WRONG. Now I've learned that only a select few are qualified to sell these bolts because no one f**king has them. Lowes, Home Depot, Sears. I called around 15 stores including mostly bolt and nut suppliers. No one had them, they could order them, but many needed a $50 order before they'd put in an order. Ended up I was searching for the suppliers for major manufactures. They were use to big orders. Anyway, I finally found them without a large order. If you need them and can't find them in your area call; UTTERBACK SUPPLY FASTENERS (317)637-6468=$2.45ea. Not too bad. I was gonna just use a piece of treaded rod(all thread) but I'm worried about the strengh since it's a body mount. I opted for the search for bolts. I'm not sure if this applies to all step kits. Mine were Pro Steps ordered from 4wheelparts.com. Just trying to help avoid the probs I've had. Take care all.

Message: After installing the 3" body lift kit did you have to buy a modified tube step or were you able to use the old ones and readjust the way it is mounted.

Message: Well the bars went on yesterday. After getting the longer bolts it was a snap. I think it took about 45 minutes to finish. I must say they look good. I didn't buy modified bars or change the way they mount. Just installed what they sent me, exception being the bolts used. The only thing is that they're not up against the body due to the lift. I don't think they look bad where they're at. Actually I think they're more functional a little lower and they hide the frame better since it was a body lift. My girlfriend, soon to be wife, is only 5'0" and she needed a step getting in so she didn't have to jump anymore. The bolts I used were actually 12mmx180mm and they worked fine. Plenty of thread for them to grab. I'll say the 180mm bolts worked for this kit, I don't know if they would be long enough for others. A reply to my first post said they used 190mm. I would probably use those if in doubt. Has anyone had much problem with rocks ruining the chrome finish right behind the front wheels. I've noticed the BFG's M/T KM's throw a lot of rocks. It's created a nice orchastra of pings as the rocks carrom of the truck. I haven't noticed any dents though, so they must be hitting the wheel well. Just wondering.

Message: i put oem mud flaps on to protect the nerf bars.but the front ones dont hang as low as the ones in the rear and they dont protect the bars.(after the body lift)
im going to see if the rear set will fit in the front and order another rear set.i might add the fit looks close to the eye.
as soon as it warms up ill check it out.
