Subject: larger tires and OD?

I was told two different things and I figure who better to ask than all you. I have 33x12.5x15 bfg and since I put them on the truck keeps shifting in and out of overdrive. I was told to fix this problem to change gears or to get the computer reprogramed. I just wanted to know the best way to correct this. If you need my info I have a 99 dakota 4x4 3.9 automatic everything is stock except 3inch lift and new rims and tires. thanks in advance

Being that you are pushing those tires with the 3.9 (not insulting the engine), I would go with the gears. It will give you the extra power I am sure you'd like.

I am assuming it is a 4x4, so of course you will need 2 sets, front and rear differential. You will be installing a lower gear ratio, so it will lower your top speed, but accelleration will be benefit greatly. I have no idea how much they will cost you, you will have to look around and price them. I have seen that a very popular size is to go with 4.10 gears. You probably have either 3.55 or 3.92 gears in it now. I saw on truckperformance.com that they are going for $200-260, of course plus installation unless you can do it yourself. I just looked at one place, there might be cheaper.

Go with the 410 I did and the shifting problem stopped on my truck I would have went 456 though because I have heavy QC V8.

make sure to post where you get your gears and how much you paid. I am sure there are a lot of people who would like to know their options.

Texasboy, I went to a gear specialist for that work and it cost about 1500.00 for front & back. Some of that cost was because I put in a limited slip also. ask around at your nearest 4X4 shop, they should know who does gears in your area. Have fun guy!

That is a good point. That will be the time to put locker/limited slip in your truck...

I have read several posts about people using Superlifts tru-speed recalibration for bigger tires. I have only heard positive experiences. It adjusts your speedo, shift points, and everything affected by bigger tires. You will still have a little loss of power, but atleast your tranny will know what is going on.
