Message: To Walt or anyone that can help:
Do you have any diagrams on cutting and welding an extension on the steering linkage and 4x4 linkage?
I am wondering if I need an extension on the actual horizontal linkage or on the vertical lever before it comes through the floorboard at the transfer case?
Also where am I adding it onto the steering linkage?
Can you please shed some light for me.
My truck is a 1996 3.9L extended cab with a 2" body lift and 32" AT's. I can't get it into 4low and want t0 fix it. Thanks.

Message: Please explain what you mean by you can’t get into 4lo. The transfer case shifter extension is simply a threaded piece (in the kit) that screws onto the shifter after unscrewing the knob. Then the knob just screws onto the extension. It just raises the knob up 3”. If you can’t pull the shifter back far enough to engage 4lo it sounds like either something underneath is out of adjustment or just the knob doesn’t have the extension and is hitting on the floor when pulled all the way back for 4lo. There is not other modification required to the transfer case shifter and I’m not even sure it’s required with the 2” body lift like it was with the 3”
The other under hood modifications should have no bearing on the TC shifter. I don’t have any diagrams but the under hood part of the 3” body lift install is quite simple. You’re only tack welding a short 3” extension into the automatic transmission shifter rod. It’s the vertical rod under the hood that connects the column shifter to the transmission and has a couple of bends in it. You just run a marker lengthwise along one edge of the rod on the straight section near the top. Cut it somewhere near the middle of the mark and then tack in the extension (included with the body lift kit) keeping the marks lined up to keep the bends on the ends correct in relation to each other. If you have access to a welder, it’s literally like 2 seconds of welding.
For the steering extension, under the hood there is a small slip shaft between the steering box coupler and the rag joint. You undo a set screw/bolt and with a little work and some prying, you can slowly work the shaft out of place. I ran into a little trouble here as my shaft had rusted into place and I had to fight it to get it out. Once it’s out, you just replace it with the longer one included with the body lift kit.

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my ’88. Typically, I will NOT respond to the emails (about 95%) that ask questions I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you encounter? etc, etc...)

Message: My kit didn't come with the extension and I was able to purchase one from a 93 dakota, but the extension was metric and didn't fit. It wouldn't screw onto the transfer case lever but the knob screwed on fine. Weird? And I was told I couldn't get one for a 96.
So should I just weld on 2"? Yes it does hit on the floor when coming from neutral to 4 low.
My truck is a 5 speed, not an auto so I was asking if I need to extend it? also, I feel the steering knocking now so I was wondering if there's a way to make it feel right again?
I am asking because my Performance lift came only with the basics...2" blocks and new bolts. Everything else I did myself (bumpers etc..)
Also do you know where I can get a chrome rear diff cover for a 3.9L v6 96? I've looked everywhere and can't find it except for the V-8's. I noticed your black dakota(lifted) had one.
Thanks for your help, I'll send a pic of my truck when I take a good one, and your website is very helpfull.

Message: Check out my web page. I just built my own 3.5" lift and found an easy steering extension.
