I have a 1994 Dakota Sport club cab with a 4 inch suspension lift and 32 11.50 tires on it. I am having trouble keeping passenger side front axles on my truck. I've replaced the same axle 3 times in the last year. I don't 4 wheel it much at all and the last two times it snapped, all I did was put it in 4 wheel drive to get around in the snow and it popped. It seems to happen when I turn left with the truck in 4 wheel drive. Any ideas what is causing this and how I can stop it???

With the wheels straight look down at the CV axles from the top. Are they straight or does it appear the CV axles are angled back some. Just a theory but from my experience with the TrailMaster suspension kit, the brackets are very easy to bend. If that control arm shifted back some, it very possible that you might be exceeding the limit of the CV joint when turning left. How exactly is the axle “Popping”? Is it the inner or outer joint that’s failing? While I haven’t experienced the same failure as you, I’ve had plenty of durability issues with the TrailMaster kit. If I were to take an educated guess, you’re popping the outer joint after repeated hard lefts. Let me know here, what it looks like.

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my
’88. Typically, I will NOT respond the emails (about 90%) that ask questions
I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who
makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you
encounter? etc, etc...)

Thank you for replying to my question. I will check the angle. The cv joint is actually popping on the inside. It takes about a 2 inch piece out of the housing when it happens. I bought this truck about a year ago and have found some really bad things since. I have had the shock towers rebuilt and it seems to be wearing the inside of the tires still. Have taken it to three different alignment shops. The last one is a frame shop. They rebuilt the towers and have made it better but they still wear. The truck apparently wasn't cared for and I guess I am trying too hard to restore it.
