Subject: Bigger Tires Require Lift?
IP: Logged

Message:
My question is very simple:

I am purchasing a '98 Dodge Dakota 4WD Club Cab with stock wheels, and I would like to increase the size. I would like to jump to 31's probably 12.5 rather than 10.5 but I need to know if that should actually be done with a lift kit as well?

Does anyone have a photo of a truck like such without a lift?

I'm at stage 1: purchase, so I need whatever advice you can give. The budget isn't too large right now, but I'm looking at about 3k to put into this deal.

I appreciate all the knowledge everyone shares on this site, it is very helpful. I'm looking to tap into that now....

I'm all ears....

Well i believe you can fit 31x12.5 tires on a stock dakota....but not entirely sure with the stock wheels though. You can pick up a set of American Racing 767 black steel wheels with maybe 3.5" backspacing for less than $300 and no need to worry about a lift. I always find that those wheels look good on a dak ;)

If you plan some wheeling, then go ahead and lift it, if not, u can do it without a lift.

Ok so the follow up question I guess would be about performance. I plan on having the speedometer calibrated with the larger tires, but will there be a huge impact with my stock gears? Do I need to plan on upgrades there as well?

This trucks is going to be used for light off road farm stuff, and showing off around the neighborhood.

Well, it depends on what gears you have. I'm sure 31's will not do any noticeable difference. Going to 33 or higher will need regearing. Don't stock 4x4's come with 31's? I had the v-6 2wd dakota with 3.55 gears and had 31x10.5's on there with no difference in power.
