Subject: BODY + SUSPEN LIFT IP: Logged
Message: I talked to a mechanic today who does mostly everything to cars and trucks. I went in cause he is a friend of mine and he said if im gonna do a body lift not to do a suspension also cause it will screw up all kinds of things like alignment and shyt. I was wondering what all you guys think?

Message: It's just the politically correct thing for him to say. Most lift kit manufactures will have printed in their install instructions somewhere that they don’t recommend combining body and suspension lifts. It’s just to cover their ass in the event some yahoo rolls his truck and then tries to sue them. The logic to that CYA tactic is that by installing a lift kit, you are altering the vehicles center of gravity. By combining two kits you are altering it that much more, possibly making the vehicle more prone to rollover. By telling you “You shouldn’t” it gives them some slight defense in the event you do, roll the truck and then try to sue them. They can come back and say that you didn’t use their product in accordance of the manufactures instructions and move the blame back to the installer and not their product. While most manufactures say you shouldn’t, it’s a fairly common practice. Some manufactures even do it on their own display/test rigs.
A body lift has no impact on front end alignment so combining it with a suspension lift won’t make a difference in the way the suspension performs other than the fact that the center of gravity is now slightly higher. The suspension lift however will have an impact on alignment because you are moving suspension components from their factory mounting points. Depending on the quality of the suspension lift, you may run into problems maintaining alignment. I have a 4” Trailmaster suspension kit on my ’88 and have had issues with keeping the front end aligned. Mostly because the lift kit brackets are not durable enough for off-road use. Every time I take the truck out wheeling, I bend something that was part of the lift kit. I attribute the problem to the flimsy brackets and not because I also have a body lift installed.

Message: i have both lifts on my truck also but i installed both myself. as far as performance i have had no problems, but other minor things happened like my cruise control doesnt work anymore and i dont think my airbag works because the light is always on, and my fog lights dont work anymore cuz i accedently shorted them out. but it looks good and runs good. and is awesome offroad.
