Subject: 02-04 rear leaf springs??? IP: Logged
Message: Do the leaf springs on Dakotas usually sit ontop of or beneath the axle in most years?
Mine is an 04 and it's mounted below the axle. I wanted to lift the rear 2 or 3 inches and it looks like it's going to be way too expensive to do.
Seems like all the suspension lift kits for Dakotas use blocks, but are only manufactured for years up to 2002. Do the 2002's and early have the leaf springs on top? Does anyone have a Dakota that's an 03 or an 04 with a suspension lift that can tell me what to do?

According to Daystar, shackles won't work because of the way the springs are attached to the frame/body.
According to my local 4x4 shop add-a-leafs will work, but only if there is enough tension in them to compensate for the size of the extra leaf.
Blocks obviously won't work because they will drop it.
The only solution seems to be relocating the springs ontop of the axle, but that looks like it'd give 4 or 5 inches of lift and will involve a lot of cutting and welding to remove/attache new flat mounting points. EXPENSIVE!!!

Message: Sounds like you've got a 2 wheel drive truck. 4wd's have the springs on top of the axle, 2wd's have the axle mounted on top of the springs.

Message: here you go , fabtech sells them so does rancho I beleive
aabout the add a leaf .... I don't think it's too stiff , I hear people saying that , but I don't agree . I have adjustable shocks in rear and are on level 2 and are fine . Now Deavers are the way to go , but you're forking out 500 bones vs 50 bones . The Deavers give you performance big time .....................Nate the add aleaf goes inbetween the overload leaf the very bottom one of the pack , so the add a leaf will be the next to the last . You remove the u bolts and last leaf and put in the add a leaf and put the last one on and put back u bolts .............I think there's a bolt holding all the leafs together ...........

Message: People are telling me a hundred different things. I don't want to order an AAL if it's not going to work on my 2wd.
If you've got pictures of an Add-A-Leaf that has lifted the rear of your Dakota I believe you. I can't find anywhere that has them available to order. The best I can find is a set on JCwhitney.com that says they are good for 1997-2001 models. Everyone seems to know the answer, but no one can show me a link to something that I can buy that will work.
Did anyone look at the pictures I put up?

LOOK AT THIS PICTURE AND TELL ME HOW AN ADD-A-LEAF IS GOING TO LIFT THAT!
I've heard a few people say that a very long and stout AAL on the top of the leaf pack would be enough to put pressure upwards that'd lift the truck. Last time I checked most AAL kits were just a flat peice of metal that you stuck in the bottom of the leaf pack. If that is the case it will most definately NOT lift anything if the leaf springs are mounted under the axle.
