it unscrews. You just have to get a good grip on it. You can also use one of those band type wrenches but it shoudl unscrew. just gotta muscle it a little

On my 98 model, the plastic cap that has the gear selection on it (2h,4h,n,4l) pops out. I took a flathead screwdriver and stucker in there and did a little bit of prying and it poped right out. Then there is a nut in there that you have to unscrew after you unscrew that, the knob unscrews too, It don't just pull off. Maybe this will help you if you havn't figured it out yet.
