Subject: 32x11.5 or 33x12.5?HELP ME DECIDE?

Message:
I will be installing a PA 3" lift in my 97 SLT 4x4 shortly and need help deciding what tire size to go with on my stock 15x8's? i don't mind trimming but i don't want to deal with a lot of rubbing on the frame. Are the 33x12.5's troublesome when parking and taking sharp corners? Do the 32x11.5 look "rugged" enough? I know there are a lot of posts about the 33's and all but i would like any and everyone's opinion, PLEASE!!!!!

no ? about it

Although every truck is different, I think that the 33's might rub on full turn with the factory rims. I have 33s on 15x8's with a 3" body lift, but my the backspacing is 3.75" while the factory backspacing is 5.5". This means that they stick out 1.75" farther and make more clearance when turning. From what I have read, there are people who have had this problem.

depends on your gears in my opinion. I had the 3.55 with 32s and 33s. 32s was not so bad but the 33s were killing my tranny. With 33s on the freeway I had to drive 75 just to keep it in overdrive and it would downshift at the slightest incline. In the city I just didn't even bother with O/D, I always turned it off. 33s just bog the engine too much in my opinion but 32 were not too bad.

I have to agree about the gears. I had 3.55s with the 33s and it was a tranny killer. After spending alot of hard earned cash to get 4.10 gears, the 33s are no problem. Also, if you want "rugged" go with some mud terrain tires. That is, of course, if you can find them in a 32" size. From my experience, that size is not very common and very few companies make it.

Personally I'd go with the 32's or maybe even 31's. If you're planning to regear then go for the 33's... but you're going to end up spending alot of money regearing and recalibrating everything to make up for the 33's

go for the 32's they fit good on the stock rims and they won't rub like the 33's

Glad to hear you found some 32 MTs. I thought that would be the best way to go for you. What brand of tire did you go with? I'd like to see a pic if you have one.

i went with the Kumho venture MT's. The tread pattern is very similar to the BFG MT's but the price was a lot better. Picked them up for $98 each from tirerack.com. I did a little research on them too and they were pretty well liked by customers and other reviews. I'm going for the look more than the actual offroad function, but i think they will be useful for the winters. Here is the only pic I have for now with the new tires installed. Once again, thanks to everyone for your help.

I just got 33x10.5 BFG MTs
I am loving them. I have 3.55 gears and havent noticed much negative tranny issues, but have not been on the highway much (about two weeks old). I dont have a problem keeping it out of OD, as it would be similar in gas mileage as getting new gears. I dont have time to off road much, but have not had problems with sand and hills I have gone on so far. Hunting trip is coming up, so that could change my mind. I wanted 33s to fill the wheel wells after the 3" BL. I had BFG ATs in 31" before and these are a little louder on the road, but so is my flowmaster...
I went with the 10.5 because I didnt have the cash for wheel change also, kept my stock 15" wheels.

good luck and enjoy!

forgot to mention the rub....
I have a little rub at full turn, but not bad. This weekend I had to haul a bed full of old concrete and I had rub on the rear fender flares - the lower front section...but only while taking turns. Keep in mind that not all 33s are truly 33 inches. I think Interco and the BFG MTs are the closest to a full 33 inch diameter.
hope this helps. I considered 33x12.5 but was concerned with rub using my stock wheels. I dont regret the 10.5 I went with...although the wider wheels do look great.
