Message: Torsion bars are used in Dakotas (and many other automobiles) as the front suspension. They are used in place of springs when springs are too big or in the way of certain types of front ends, i.e. 4 WD etc, where a spring would be rigth were the front axles need to be. They are long rods made of spring steel and are twisted to give spring to the front end. One end (the suspended or wheel end) is usually splined or has an 'L' shape to it and integrates with the lower A arm and pushes it down. The other end may also be 'L' shaped but in our case has a spline and a short arm on it with a big bolt going through it. When this bolt is tightened to the frame it twists the bar thusly pre-loading the suspension and in turn forcing that lower A-arm on the other end down, giving us suspension. By cranking down on these bars you can lift your truck (to some degree before knocking the alignment off). Most Dak owners have lifted their truck up to 3 inches without needing an alignment (I have done 2" and none was needed). Just make sure that you use a torque wrench and that your torsion bars have equal torque on them to maintain level left to right. In some cases one side may need to be higher torque to maintain level, but that is usually an older truck.
