Subject: Where do I get NEW torsion bars? IP: Logged
Message: Greetings,
I've been reading this BB for a while and now I won't lurk in the wings any longer. Where do you fellas/ladies source your torsion bars from? I have an '88 4x4 longbed that is in excellent condition - no rust anywhere (suprising considering I live in PA and they use SALT for traction aid). The old girl has 120K on her and runs as though she is just broke in. It is a commuter and used often for quite heavy tasks on the farm. Only problem, during the last 6 months, I've notived the front end sagging more and more. I have always run 9.50-31's and they never rubbed until recently. The torsion bar adjusters are maxed out, so I guess it's time for new ones. Where can I get a new set, what size, and how much do they cost? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Dealer item and should run you about $125 per side. A lot of people on the various Dakota boards have referred to a company called Sway-Away for torsion bars. When I called them two years ago, they didn’t make hex end bars, only spline (GM & Mitsubishi) ends and had no plans for hex.

I checked Sway-Away too. Left them an email which they never replied to - they must not stock them -or-need the business. $250/set isn't bad from Mopar, after all, I've given them a real workout. BTW, do you know if the torsion bars come in different spring rates? I want her as stiff as possible for farm duty. Thanks for your reply, I've been looking at your site and scratching my head over your rig. Man, oh man!! If I only had the TIME I wouldn't mind doing something similar to my 'ol gal. Really SWEET! Nice JOB!

Message: Walt!
Thanks a bunch! I'll leave the old ones on until summer when PADOT is "scheduled" to redo our road. No use pounding the snot out of new ones on roads that are so whipped. I'm going to go with the 2000# set. My Dak was always pretty stiff and may have had these from the factory (1490# payload package). Thanks for your input. It is wonderful to communicate with someone who is experienced in these matters. Around here, a lot of the parts brokers are without a clue. If you ask them for anything that isn't in the computer, they look at you as though you were from mars. Thanks Again!
