Subject: Mickey Thompson or Swamper? IP: Logged
Message: HI,
I am looking at getting either the mickey thompson baja claw 33X12.5X16 or the swamper ssr 33X12.5X16...anyone know which is better? I am running 31's right now with the pa 3 inch lift, and have a ton of room for bigger tires.
Thanks, Jason

Message: My suggestion would be neither, try the super swamper TSL radials.. they have deeper lugs, and longer tread life than the ssr's, they also do better offroad.. the ssr's are more often seen on show trucks that never see the dirt... baja claws are good for rock crawling and thtas about it in my opinion, a buddy of mine has them, and i am constantly pulling him out of the mud with my wrangler MT/R's when we go hit the trails.. super swamper tsl radials are going to be my next set of tires... i would suggest them

Message: swampers fool cause the mickeys suk basically and wear like a bitch. Sine ur runnin such a small tire either go with the tsl radial or truxus mud terrain. If i were you i would go with the truxus mud terrain cause iv heard they are pretty good. Or you could just put ground hawgs on then you would own any one.

Message: Tires used on my Dakota:
31" Stock tires just suck.
31" MT Baja Claws - Suck on/off road, loud, pull on the freeway
33" Goodyear MT/Rs - Great road tire, great off road, quiet and smooth.
33" Super Swamper TSL Radial - The best off road, loud on road.
I have 2 sets of rims MT/Rs for road and TSL Radials for off road.
Goodyears if you only go offroad twice a year.
TSL Radials is you go off road once a month.

Message: I am also running the 33" Super Swamper TSL Radials. Best tires I have run so far. There is a little hum on the freeway, but they dont roar like my BFG Km's did.

Message: Swampers TSL have very little wear. I put 20k miles on mine (mostly paved roads sadly) and have just started to see them cut in to the tread. I never thought they were too loud and worked OK for mud and snow. I do like the appearance of the SSR's and think I would buy them over the M/T's.

Message: I don't know where you fellas get your info, but a tsl swamper radial isn't the best option. It is a radial but still wears horrable. The swamper ssr is also a radial and lasts better. The ssr does not have as large of lugs but is still better in off road performance. The amount of siping, side wall lugs, and aggressive design make the ssr superior in the mud. If you don't want to believe me, refer to the article in peterson's fourwheel and offroad magazine printed a few years ago that test the top 10 mud tires. The swamper ssr was second, beaten only by the swamper bogger.

Message: I come from an opposite opinion but my setup is a little different because my ’88 Dakota doesn’t see a lot of road use. Mostly to and from the trails. I have a set of 33x13.50/15 Baja Claws mounted on Champion bead lock rims. They’re not the steel belted radials but the fiberglass bias-ply. At 10psi, these Claws are like tank tracks. I’ve had the truck in mud up to the tops of the tires and never had a problem with traction. I’m on my second set of Claws and the last time I got the truck stuck was the day after I put a brand new set of MT/Rs on the truck. Two days later, I swapped back to a new set of Claws. Off road, I don’t think the MT/Rs come even close but we’re comparing two very different types of tires. I think as an all-purpose tire, the MT/Rs are probably a better choice but those who have said the Claws suck off road, I strongly disagree.
As soon as I get the video captured, I have footage of my Dakota dragging a full size RamCharger with 35” Swamper TSLs up a muddy hill he couldn’t make. Granted his tires were worn a little more than mine are but I quite literally dragged him up with no wheel spin what so ever. He made his first attempt only to make it about ¼ way. After two more attempts and getting his truck sideways on the trail, he backed down and I went up to the top with no effort. He tried a few more times, and then I backed down in reverse, hooked a strap to him then dragged him to the top. I don’t see the Swamper TSL having any advantage over a Baja Claw in the mud or sand. I thinks the lugs are too big

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my
’88. Typically, I will NOT respond the emails (about 90%) that ask questions
I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who
makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you
encounter? etc, etc...)

Message: Deffinetly the Swamper TSL-Bias are the best tire on the planet. They do great in the mud and snow. They don't wear fast at all. They are the best tire i have ever had. They also aren't that expensive!!!TSL-Bias
