Subject: snorkel differential vents? IP: Logged
Message: I recently submereged my differentials on my 02 V8 4x4 with dirty ass pond water during a flood. Then someone asked me if my differentials were snorkeled/vented. I assumed that they are but can anyone tell me for sure? The water was just over the tires.(about 2.5 ft) Should I check them or is this not a problem? Thanks in advance.

Message: no its not equipped with a snorkel, that little metal coil cable that runs along your rear axle is your differential breather, oftern times water, sand, mud and all sorts of road crap get sucked into that thing and end up inside... causing it to wear out faster..

Message: i would check them, its better to be safe then sorry!! spending a few $s on diff lube and gasket(s) is a LOT cheaper then a new diff/axle....also if you have any small cracks in your CV boots, water could have found its way into the CV joints!
the transfer case should be OK, i bieleve its sealed...
i guess what i'm trying to say is, check it for your truck's sake.

Message: Ok dan, thanks for the help. By the way, if there is a CV boot crack, do I need to do anything more than replace the boot, or do I need to have the dealer inspect for damage to the CV as well?

Message: If the truck is under warranty, take it to the dealer, either way, get it fixed as soon as possible, because inside those boots is grease for your axle bearings, as the wheel turns and spins, grease is thrown and spun out of that crack in the boot, causing the bearing to lock up on bare metal, after that, the axle shaft is useless.. get my drift???
