Subject: 10" lift for 2K Dak + Other Q's IP: Logged
Message: alright, lots of questions here. ive been working with a guy through email that owns a 4x4 shop and is offering to do some work on my truck. i have a 2000 club cab dakota. i know that lifts starting this year for the dakotas are pretty tricky, so thats my first point of concern. i believe the lift is made my whiplash suspensions. he's offering the whole lift, kit and install, for 500. yes, a bargain and a half. then he can get me a good deal on wheels/tires as well. soo.. should i go for it? what would be the pros/cons of this big of a lift. would i need to put new gears in? how about some sort of programmer to compensate for the new size tires? and will i lose lots on gas mileage? what else should i know about doing this? any and all help would be appreciated, thank you so much in advance.

Message: ok. bigger tires just about always loose gas milliage.
second how good a friend is this individual? I ask to see if after cutting you this bargain will he be able to cut you future bargains in most likly replacement parts and labor. Whiplash lifts do not have positive feedback, I have seen a couple satisfied customers but the large majority of feedback is negative.
as well rack and pinion steering in this truck can't go that high. It would probable work if they replaced the steering or relocated the system itself.
gears, again like millage will depend on the tire size how often and how hard you put your fooot into the gas and what type of power/longevity you would like. I personally would suggest them especially if you have 35 or larger tires on 3.55 gears
A calibrator isn't neccasarily required this would depend on tire size. You can get a dealer to do a reflesh.
I personally did this, however any damage you do to your truck, yourself or others I will not be liable for. Or remove the dash, little glass cover over the speedometer(takes 5minutes acouple screws on the glass and the dash just pulls off) and remove the needle (it pulls off as well). Get on a straight vacant road or uncrowded interstate. Make sure it is a longer road. Get a friend with an accurate speedo to set cruise at 50 or 60 next to you(cell phone works wonders). Match his speed and stick the nettle back on the gauge at what speed you decide to adjust the gauge at. I personally did this, however any damage you do to your truck, yourself or others I will not be liable for
hopefully this helps and will save you some cash for probable repairs with just about any lift that large. If he owns a shop see f he can do a straight axle conversion for you.

Message: dude, whiplash is a bunch of scam artists who do NOT!!!! know how to build quality lifts. Please do everyone around you a favor by NOT buying their sh!t that will break on you.
besides, what you need 10" of suspension lift for anyway? if you're going to run tires bigger than 35s on the stock suspension (with a lift), please stay off the road - the ball joints/tie rods have enough problem as it is keeping stock truck in one piece, by putting that much extra stress, you're just endangering everyone..
get an axle swap, or stay with a 35 and smaller tire.

Message: All im really going to say is... if you have that whiplash suspension put on your truck.. you might as well drop the damn thing off at the junkyard at the same time, whiplash has one of the worst reputations for suspension lifts for dakotas, along with truckin suspension and anything to do with the company called AIM there are only 2 suspension companies that make a good lift for dakotas and back up their product.. Rancho 3inch lift (high quality) and Tough Country 5.5inch lift (average quality)and you can add on a body lift to either one but if you want to know anything about AIM or truckin suspensions , check the old posts on here or just simply talk to Knobbyman

Message: thanks for the help everyone. im new to the 4x4 scene, so its good to have people like you to help guide me before i make a big mistake on a truck that i saved up for for a long time. i think it would be best not to mess with the suspension for now, ill stick with a body lift and some 33s. are these body lifts hard to do? ive got a few friends that are really good mechanics, should i try to do it with some friends, or have it done professionally? thanks again for all the help.

Message: I would have it proffessionally done, usually comes out to be $400-$600 including the price of the body lift, the reason i say have it done proffessionally.. if something were to go wrong during the installation, they are responsible..not you, plus the steering shaft has to be cut in half and have a 3 inch extension welded into place, as well as some tricky hose work with your gas filler hose.. also make sure the kit comes with a shifter extension for your transfer case shifter and get aluminum block if you can, they are alot stronger and last alot longer than the graphite blocks

Message: Brandon, you dont have to do it professionally. Although it may be the smart thing to do, but for the amount of money they will charge you to do it, it doesnt seem worth it. I installed mine in less than 6 hours with a little help from my air compressor. You say you have some friend mechanics, well then buy them a fruit basket and get to work. PA 3 inch body is the best one. Yes you do need to extend the steering shaft, but you will not need to mess with any hoses. They have plenty of slack to cover a 3 inch lift.
Take a look and let me know what you think of my dak. I only have 3 inches of body lift.

Any questions pertaining to the body lift just holla!

Message: to tell you the truth man,
I put them on myself. I just had to wait until I had enough balls to actually drill through my roof! I simply connected the power wire to the parking lights so whenever they are on the orange lights come on.
And to be completely honest, i bought them a Advanced Auto Parts for like 20.00=cheap but who would know? right!.
Make sure they are DOT approved though...they wont pass inspection if they arent.

Any side shots of the truck? I'm wondering how noticable the frame becomes with the body lift. Can you fit 33's on that thing or not?

Message: I will post some side shots later today. And yes they come with this foam fitting which keep water from leaking into the cab. The holes are not deep because you just have to drill through the top your truck....it isnt thick at all. You will need to pull back your headliner and run the wires down the front right door pannel. Other than that, its pretty easy. The only thing is, you need to drill 3 little holes about an 1/8 of an inch for each light. it was easy though.
I tried fitting 33's on it on Friday of last week. I rubbed in the front on the plastic bumber part and then on the backside of the wheel well. Im planning on cranking the torsion bars on saturday to get those 33's to fit. We will see.
