Subject: Torsion bars maxed IP: Logged
Message: I just got back from Les Schwab for an alighnment and to get the torsion bars cranked up to level out the truck. The tech told me that they were already maxed and showed me that the adjustment bolts were already turned as far as they can go. The heads of the bolts were against the frame or where ever they are screwed into and if they could be adjusted, there woul be some thread exposed. My problem is that my front end dips down a bit and the truck doesnt look totaly level. Its a 93 4x4 with 318, 110,000 miles on it and the original shocks. Could worn out shocks be the cause of the nose down effect?

Message: No. The shocks provide no support for the truck at all. All your support comes from the springs and or torsion bars. It is possible that if te previous owner already had the bars cranked all the way that they are just worn out. Might need a need set. I would say that your ride and handling will be MUCH better with new shocks if you still have the original ones and 110,000 miles on them. Just dont replace the shocks expecting it to raise the front of the truck up.

Message: My friend, you need new shocks. You will notice a world of difference! How low is your front end sagging? Is the rear end lifted also - maybe too much?

Message: I think Brent is right. The torsion bar on the driver's side is cranked all the way it could go, the one on the passenger's side is maybe halfway. My truck sits level, so no need to adjust them yet. But I wonder how hard it would be to do what Brent said so the Driver's side would be equally as adjustable as the pass.?

Message: Does anyone know why the torsion bars are unequal in adjustment? I just cranked up my torsion bars to level truck out some, the drive side is at about 80% and passanger at about 60-70% with the truck level side to side. My front end must have been really nosediving because I went up close to an inch and I still have more adjustment to go, truck looks way better now and ride or handling has not changed much at all. Just gotta get my front end aligned tomorrow, don't wanna wear out my new tires. Hawkeye, if you read this. How much adjustment do you have remaining on your bars?

Message: A torsion bar is basically a lateral spring and not every torsion bar is exactly at the listed spring rate. One side may be slightly stiffer than the other and will require less adjustment at the factory to achieve the same ride height as the opposite side. Also, because springs will settle over time and will do so at different rates, torsion bars that were evenly adjusted at the factory, may not be even a few years later. Example: A few years back, I was at a company picnic and had parked on a steep embankment at an angle with the left front wheel at the lowest point on the hill. After only a few hours, the driver’s side had settled about a half inch and I had to crank that bar up some to level the truck again.
You can do what Brent did, but that is not advisable. You have to remember, it’s a spring, designed to operate within a certain range of stress. The more you twist the bar, the closer it comes to the breaking point. If you have cranked a torsion bar to the point that you have to remove the anchor and rotate it a sixth of a turn to gain more adjustment, that bar has weaken and should be replaced.
TigerDak, shocks have nothing to do with the ride height. The weight of the truck is supported by the springs, not the shock. New shocks wont make a difference in height unless you install air shocks and max them out.

Message: You have coil springs probably, get coil spring spacers to lift the front end.

Message: For the back you will need to add blocks or an add a leaf depending on how high you need or want it. You can get blocks from 1" to 3" I believe and tha add a leaf will give more spring and raise initially 2.5" but should sag to 2" or so.

Message: yeah i cranked mine again, because while it was at dodge they lowered it back down. anyways, i noticed my passenger side was about 1/2 lower than the other side. hell i thought it was just me, but now i see that youre truck (2THEXTRM) sits like that. hmmm, i dunno? but i cranked mine just an inch. my front end completely fell outta my truck last week, pinion, drive train, axle, everything! and i guess it was because i had my TB's cranked to much. but i took them back up just an inch to be on the safe side. ill prolly got a little higher, because after a while, they seem to wanna sag back down.
