Subject: lift on AWD? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. Im kinda new at this so forgive me. I was wondering if there is any way to lift a 01' Dakota Quad cab with an all wheel drive system on it. Is there a simple way to get rid of the all wheel drive? do I have to change out the trnsfer case? This is my girlfriends truck and the main reason she bought it was to lift it. She found out that this wasnt possible from our local accessories dealer and is very upset. Please help with any info. Thank you. ~Mark~

Message: you can lift the all wheel drive trucks without doing anything to the transfer case .i did it to my 03 quad cab with all wheel drive and no problems so far and it has been in for about 2 months. i have the rancho lift.

Message: Thank you very much for your reply. Did you install the lift your self? if so how complicated was it? Is there an easy way to just get rid of the AWD? She kinda would like to lose that option regardless. Thanks again for your help.

Message: yes i did install the lift myself and it was not that difficult. very time consuming because i did it pretty much by myself and my mechanical ability is minimal at best. as for getting rid of the AWD ,the only way that i know of is to change the transfer case.

Message: I don't have the AWD in my Dakota, but what Scrappy said about the t-case sounds right to me. I've been doing some research on t-cases and I found one or two articles that talked about the differences in the NP-231 (4wd) and the NP-242 (awd). Unless you're dead-set on getting rid of the AWD for a part-time case, the recommendation seems to be that you keep the AWD case. The AWD case is a little stronger/beefier than a stock 231 4wd case.
If you really want to lose the AWD, and you get your hands on a 231, if you're really concerned about strength (hardcore wheeling/crawling) there's a few companies out there that sell upgraded parts for the 231.
Right now, I'm planning to rebuild my 231 with a wide-chain kit and a 6-pinion planetary setup out of an NP-241 (the 3/4 or 1-ton version of the 231).
Just my 2cents. Hope that helps!

Message: Thank you both very much for your help. I really apreciate it. Scrappy, How bad is your gas milage with the lift? How much of a diffrence did you notice? We are going to keep the AWD t-case for money reasons. I was just concerned about lifting a vehicle with AWD. Again, thank you for your help.

Message: Scrappy,
What kind of lift do you have on your '03? I've got a buddy looking to lift his '03. I'm trying to help him figure out what his options are. So far it looks to me like a PA body lift is the only option. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Message: the lift on my truck is the rancho lift. but there was a problem with spindle being different between the 03 and the 02 and earlier. on the 03 the rotors and calipers are bigger so they wouldnt fit on the spindle , so i had to replace them with the smaller parts off of a 01. this is probably going to increase the risk of warping the rotors which is apparently a problem on the earlier models. but you have to do what you got to do, right...
