Message: I see that TrailMaster has a 4" lift for the '91 Dakota. But I have heard that you can't lift the V8 '91 Dakota. Is this true? Oh, and it's 4x4. I want it for offroading, not looks :D
Thanks

Message: You can't put a 3" body lift on a '91 V8 because the cooling fan will not clear the lower radiator hose. You can get around this by using an electric fan instead.
The TrailMaster suspension kit will fit your truck, but from personal experience, if you’re looking for off-roading durability, depending on how aggressive you are, you may not be happy with the quality of the kit. I had modified one slightly to fit my ’88 Dakota and have had a hard time keeping the front end straight since. If you decide to get the kit, opt for the optional front skid plate as the replacement cross member under the front differential is prone to damage from rocks. The tabs behind the torsion bar anchors are also subject to rock damage.
Expect to shell out some cash for this project. The kit typically will run $1300 - $1500. Plus you will need to replace the rims with those of a different offset. Expect $2000-$2500 if you do the work yourself with not a lot of extras. If you start changing other parts and/or gears, it’ll cost quite a bit more. By the time I was done with mine, I had almost $6000 into mine and while I like the results, I’m not completely satisfied. For what I put into it, I should have gone the straight axle path instead. That would have made it much more durable off-road.
I have a detailed page of the installation of the kit on my truck here, with a .PDF copy of the installation instructions. It’s a large file (6.5mb) and may take some time to download.

Note: I very frequently get email from people asking about the lift kit in my ’88. Typically, I will NOT respond the emails (about 90%) that ask questions I’ve already covered on my web pages (ie. Where did you get the kit?, Who makes it?, How much did it cost?, What modifications did you have to make to get it to fit your truck?. How hard was it to install? What problems did you encounter? etc, etc...)
