Subject: 2000 Body Lift (transfer case linkage) ? IP: Logged
Message: I bought a PA 3in body lift and I'm getting ready to install it myself. I searched all the posts on this site and printed them out. I figured with all my printouts and the instructions that came with it -- I should be good to go. The only things that I couldn't find answers to was the shift extensions. I have a 2000 Dak 4.7 5 speed club cab. I have my 4x4 shifter on the floor beside my 5 speed shifter. Do both of these need extended? I believe the directions just say I need to weld an extension on the shift linkage of the 4x4 shifter. Does anyone know exactly what needs done on the 4x4 shifter and 5 speed shifter. Also I'm planning on BFG ATA 33 12.50 15 on my factory 8 inch Dodge rims....I believe this will work with trimming.

Message: It is always good to do research just like you're doing. That's smart. Yes, you will have to extend both shifters. The best way to do it is to weld in the two 3 inch pieces of steel that are provided in the kit. I have also heard of people that did not want to do any welding, somehow rigged up an extension for both using ALL-THREAD and coupling nuts. This should work also. These shifters are both too short not to extend when the body is lifted. It's a pain, but you'll have to do it. Also, with the 4.7 you will have to either extend the lower radiator hose, or replace it with a 21 inch(I think) universal hose from NAPA. I used the gas filler extension that was provided in the kit since I didn't need it where it was intended. I removed the lower radiator hose and cut it in half. I then heated it up with an acetylene torch to make the rubber pliable. I put the extension in a by grannies it worked. Only after a lot of kicking and swearing. Also on 4.7's you need to cut a piece out of the lower fan-shroud. I just removed it completely. Also, don't forget to loosen all the necessary lines, hoses, and wiring before you jack up the body. Especially, don't forget to make an extension to raise the brake lines that are mounted to the frame on the drivers side. Good Luck. My lift looks awesome and I'm sure yours will too.

Message: When I weld the extensions to both how do I get to the bottom of the shifters? I will not have to take apart the transfer case or mess with the tranny right? Can you see the ends of both shifters from underneath (the directions have a picture) but I don't know if this is after taking apart any covers that may cover up the shifters (like the some of the transfer case covers). I'm hoping this is not the case because I don't want to worry about transfer case fluid etc.. Also what do you mean by extending the brake line? Do you mean give it more slack because it is clipped to the frame or am I going to have to buy new brake lines and replace the original because they are two short? I'm already planning on buying a 21 in rad hose (i read that in another post). You mentioned the fan shroud....This is just a piece of plastic cover that prevents something from hitting the fan itself (if thats the case why trim -- Its good as gone) !! Thanks for the help I can wait to get it lifted. Also I can't decide which tires I want the 33 12.50 15 or 32 11.50 15. I know both will work (the 33's with trimming) I'm leaning toward the 33's but if the 32's will give it a smoother ride without trimming.

Message: About the brake lines...what I meant is that there is a brake line bracket that is bolted to the frame. It collects the lines that are the closest to the master cylinder. What you do is just make a 3 inch taller extention so you can bolt that bracket back to the frame. You don't need to do anything with the lines themselves. Just be easy with them and don't bend 'em and you'll be O.K. I'm glad I have an automatic and a switch for the transfer case. I'm not exactly sure which is the best way to extend both shifters, but I've heard of people doing it from inside the cab using ALL THREAD and coupling nuts. It will probably be a pain in the butt to try to get to the linkage from underneath the truck.

Message: from what i understand the all thread and coupling work on prior to 2000 dakotas. 2000+ have to weld. the only problem is getting someone to post a picture of what this extention looks like. this one picture could help LOTS of people out and stop endless posts about body lifts.
If you have a 2000+ dakota with manual xfer cse please post a picture of this extension piece.
thank you
