Subject: Torsion bar problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a 95 dakota extended cab 4x4 and i was reading on here about adjusting my torsion bars to level my truck out.....between the tires and fenders in the rear theres 7 inches and the front has 5 1/2 inches so i went out tongiht to adjust them and my torsion bars on the drivers side were already about 90% cranked and the passenger was about 80% so i was wondering if this was normal or what i could do to level the truck out since those obviously wont level it out?

Message: Dude,
You won't know if you don't try. You would be suprised how much that little bit gets you. You have to realize that you are turning a bar that has a 1" dia. and is effecting the wheel that is almost a foot and a half out from it on the end of the control arms.
Try this:
1. Straighten a coat hanger and wrap a piece of tape around it so as to make a little flag.
2. Put the flag flat on a table then put a 90 degree bend in the other end of the wire about a foot and a half up from the other end. The bent wire should be facing the same way as the flag. 3. Now lay it along the edge of a table so both the flag and bent section are hanging over the edge parallel with the table.
4. Rotate the wire. See how little the flag has to move to get some distance out of that end where the wheel would be? That is what will happen with your torsion bar.
Your concern is that you adjust the side with the least amount left first, then bring the other side up to match it. The only measurments you need to be concerned with is from the wheel to the fender lip on each front wheel. You want them to match so your rig sets level side to side. This does NOT affect your alignment! As far as front to back, don't wory about it. You can only go as high as the torsion bar with the least amount of adjustment will allow. Does any of this make sense to you?

Message: Yeah what you said made sense ....but what i was wanting to do was get the front level with the back so i can put some bigger tires on it and not worry about rubbing cause my truck has flares on it so i can shave fenders ...but i want to try to get 32's under it and i have a 2 inch body lift for it ...i just have to put that on ....btu i dont think that will give me enough height for 32's

Message: I have a 2" on my 95 right now. 32s should fit so long as you stay with the stock wheels or something close to them as far as backspacing and width goes(read other posts for backspacing info, that horse has already been beaten). You CAN get your rig "level", but the measurments you are taking front to back won't be the same because the opening on the front fender is cut lower than the opening in the back. Stand back a ways and you will see what I mean.

Message: Oops. I think I got that backwards. The rear opening is higher. Anyhow, concentrate on the rig as a whole being level and don't get too wrapped around the axle as to weather the front or rear fenders have the same exact measurement from the tires. GET THAT LIFT ON!! It only looks SO good in the box.

Message: The little two Inch lift isnt going to help a whole hell of a lot. 32inch tires will fit but will rub on the frame rail. Don't go any wider than 11.50. My dakota is a 98 ext slt with 5.5plus 3inch body w 37inch claws.
