a suspension lift separates the frame from the suspension
it increases the distance between the axles and the frame

I just got a 1989 Dodge dokota sport, it's in original state with 67k miles from a neigbor. I need to know how much to lift it in order to get either 31 or 33 inch tires on it. what size body lift as well as suspension. and if you know the company and model numbers...any and all info is greatly apreciated.

Victor,

If it's a 4x4 you should be able to clear 31x10.5s on stock wheels without any mods...maybe a little rubbing on the frame with the front wheels turned at full lock (no biggie, just keeps the frame shiny). If you switch to an aftermarket wheel with less than 4"s of backspacing (stock wheels have 5"s of backspacing), expect some contact at the lower rear portion of the front fender.

To run 33s it becomes a bit of a science project.

Choice 1. Less desirable, is to take a saws-all to the lower portion of the fenders openings, eliminating any metal that impedes the tires, as there will be rubbing.

Choice 2. What I have on my `95 is a body lift combined with the Trailmaster suspension lift for 92-96 Dakotas and offset wheels to clear the new suspension components. For an `89 you may likely need to change some front pieces as well. Google 'Walt Felix'. He performed such a mod on his older Dakota and has great details (photos included) on what he had to do to make things work.

Option 3. A straight axle swap (SAP) in front and lift blocks or new springs in the rear. This is very technical and would probably need to be performed by a shop that specializes in this kind of work.

There is one more you have not considered, running 32s.

You could probably clear a set of BFGoodrich All Terrains 32x11.5s on aftermarket wheels with a 4" offset (or 1" wheel spacers and stock wheeels) by installing a 2" body lift. While more expensive than just a set of new tires, it will get you the biggest bang for your buck.

Hope this helps.

I have a 2007 2WD Dakota and wanna make it look bigger and a little more bad azz! I dont think they make suspension kits for it but am not sure and I was considering just putting a 2" leveling kit on it w/ 32" tires and keep my 16" standard wheels. Is that a good idea or is there anyway I could lift it and make it bigger to put like 33s or something on it? Could I even put 33s on it with just the 2" leveling kit?

Interesting. Please tell me more about your 5 inch body lift. Did you use hockey pucks? and stack them up. I heard thats the cheapest way to do a body lift. I was thinking about a quick and cheap method on getting some 35 inch tires on my 4wd without spending thousands of dollars on a suspension lift. By the way glad you love your truck and decided to marry it. I'm in love with my truck too. I cant get rid of it. Its too much fun. Did your truck survive the mineshaft drop?
