For those of you out there with 3" lifts. How did your
mods affect your warranty?
I'm planning a 3" body or suspension lift (don’t know
which) and have two years powertrain warranty left so
I'd like to keep it (just had entire rear end warranted six
weeks ago)
Thanks

A 1974 law called the Magnuson Morrison act prohibits manufactures from voiding warranties for various reasons. The part of the law that would pertain to a modified vehichle stipulates that the warranty coverage would have to remain in effect and the only way a manufacturer could deny coverage is if the modifications actually caused the failure of a covered part. For example: say you installed a 3" body lift and coincidentally, a head gasket blew. The dealer could not void your warranty unless they could prove that the lift caused the gasket to fail. In short, all of your warranty remains in effect and the only way coverage would be denied is if your modifications led to the failure of a covered part.

Beware- practically ALL aftermarket and extended warranty plans will have a caveat that specifically excludes modifed and/or lifted vehicles.

Hope this helps.

Like intheknow said they cant woid the warranty just because you added a lift and bigger tires. that said it doesnt mean anything when you cant get your truck fixed because the service rep is a d**Khead and his excuse is your truck is lifted and thats why the tranny broke.
I would wait till the warranty is done and over with. Ive had friends with lifted trucks and they had problems with the service dept.

yeah, service managers and many techs are dicks when it comes to aftermarket parts. i had a toyota with a 3" block on the rear to lower it. My clutch pressure plate broke in half, and they stated it was from the drop. but some how, there was no problem with the rear seal, tail shaft, etc. I argued that something between the rear and pressure plate would have to have been affected, but the "master" tech could not agree. so, i got shafted with a $1200 clutch job. But then again i had a Z24 with cut springs and had the transmission rebuilt under warranty after the diff exploded. go figure. I will wait till at least 36K for the body lift, i only have 10K to go.

Yeah dude its wacky. I have a buddy who is a ford mechanic for abotu 20 years. he said the service writers write up stuff that is definatley not ford warranty problem and they still push it through. ive had the dodge dealer i bought my truck at say they wont work on it cause I have a winch and bigger tires and a lift. ( no lift whatsoever on my truck) I finally got a mechanic to look at it and he said its not lifted. they still didnt want to work on it. I took it down to the dodge dealer by my house and the guy said cool truck. whats wrong with it. it got fixed. nothign was said abotu the winch or bigger tires.

Rob

PS. the first dealer said I have to install stock tires for them to warranty it. It was going in for the lighter plastic ring broke and lighter fell in the dash and one of the rims was peeling paint and there was a vaccum valve recall.
