Subject: Peformance Accessories 3 ' body lift IP: Logged
Message: Hi Guys & Gals,
The next thing I would like to do to my truck is put a body lift on it (body lift is cheaper). I have a front brush guard on my truck that I am not sure will relocate with this lift? Other than that is there any thing else I need to relocate or modify. I have lowered truck in the past but never raised one. What is involved in installing a 3" body lift in my truck? Is there any special tools needed? Is one lift better than the other? I see that a few of you went with a Performance Accessories body lift and that is what I am leaning towards.
Sorry for all of the questions?
I am not sure of the brush guard brand I have, but here is a link to my web site that will show a couple pics.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Good looking Truck. I really like the S.S.Rocker Panels.
Lifting is no big deal. Go with the Performance Accessories Lift (As most of us...if not all?) have installed. The instructions would be a bit easier with photos or diagrams..but with simple wrench turning knowledge..anyone would be fine. And since you say your have lowered them before...this will be easier.
I have a little "How To" on my site for my installation of my 98 DAK. A little diffent in places....the same in others.
Also do a search on Body Lift on this site and you should be able to answer any question imaginable.

Message: Beerzilla,
No special tools required. Just have on hand a good assortment of metric and standard sockets (I don't think anything larger than 3/4 inch and 19mm is required), some socket extensions, a torque wrench, a bucket and funnel (for draining and replacing the coolant), screwdrivers, a jack (hydraulic floor jack works great), and a big block of wood (to put between the body and the jack). Jackstands help out a great deal because you can remove the wheels and get better access to everything (particularly the brakelines on the driver's side front and the steering shaft). The only special thing you will need is to have a small slug of metal (provided in the kit) welded into the rod that connects to the 4WD shifter. You can drive without it but you'll be stuck in 2WD and your shifter will flop around. Oh and something to trim the lower fan shroud with will help too, maybe a dremel tool and a file to smooth it out.
Dakota's description is good.

As a side note - If the 4x4 shifter extension has you worried...it is still possilbe to use four wheel without the extension. The "nice" handle knob cant be put back on, but you can still use it. Ive been using mine for 6 months now without the extension. (Note to self - go buy a friggin welder already!!)
So dont let that stop you.
Don't Forget pics when your done..we all need to see!

Message: Dakota, just a note, the shifter on the 2000's is a bit different than on th 97 to 99. The rod gets welded into the linkage bar, not the shifter itself as in the 97 to 99's. On yours the shifter is attached to the transfer case, on ours it is attached to the body and connected to the t-case by a linkage bar. :-)

Message: Thanks for the complements and thanks a ton for all of the help guys!
Now I just need to figure out where a guy can buy the performance accessory 3 “ kit for a good price? My future Father in law has a welder and he is pretty handy with the wrenches maybe I will see if I can talk him into helping me.
Thanks again for all of the help

Message: One more thing, I love the look of your trucks with the lift! They are sharp looking trucks with out the lift but man do they look mean with it. Dakota, I checked out your web site, Great info and some sweet pics! The only problem is I have wasted half of my morning here at work checking stuff out on your site and have not accomplished a dang thing :-P
I am glad to see there is another Dakota enthusiast out there who is also a firefighter. Congratulations on passing your firefighter 1 test. I went through my Firefighter 1 class about a year and a half ago now, and I start EMT on Feb 5th. My station is has full timers, paid on call & volunteers. I personally am on the paid on call division. You are lucky you can put lights on your personal vehicles. We can only put amber lights on ours vehicles and we still haft to obey all traffic laws.

Beer - Mmmmmmm beer... Oh ya... thanks. Im a full volunteer - and with that comes Blue lights. As many as we want. I went a little overboard...hehe.. 18 strobes total, plus wig-wag headlights. Dont forget the siren (only air-horn is used thou). I never end up using all of them though. Only while on scene. It almost creates more problems having them on that anything.
Glad you liked the site...im in my Version 4.2...
As a side note, Version 4.3 will be realesed very soon with much more details in each catorory.
Take it easy everyone!

Message: Why does the Performance Accessories Web Site say you can't put their 3" lift on a Dakota that has an auto transmission? Clearly some of you guys have done it. (ie: Beerzilla) I've got a 2001 QC 4.7 4x4 auto 3.55 and would like to lift it 2 or 3 inches before putting on 31x10.5 meats. It wouldn't be necessary , but I want the look. Am I wrong or is their info wrong?

Message: Part number 60043, I believe.
And Canadak, you can use the kit on Daks with auto transmissions. I was just on the PerfAcc website and the tech notes for the 00-01 3 inch lift don't indicate that it can't be used on an auto...the applicable tech notes mention that bumper brackets and steering extension are included, that the rear bumper shouldn't be used for towing, and that gap guards are sold separately. In their tech notes list, there is one that says not to be used with an automatic transmission, but that particular note isn't applicable to your Dak.

Message: I was planning on installing my lift on saturday, but it came early so I did it on wednesday. I started at 7 and finished around 5:30. I did it my self with a high lift jack. The hardest part to do was the steering extension and I couldn't understad how to do the front bumper brackets so I drilled holes 3in above the old ones and it looks great. I made my own lift lips for $15.
Now I am just waiting on some 33's.

Message: Hate to say this, but it sounds like one of two things:
1. an unrelated problem that happend when you did the lift. There is nothing about installing the lift that should affect your ABS function as long as the directions were followed.
2. a mistake of some sort during install that caused your ABS controller to go nuts. I can't image what would have caused this if the directions were followed.
Just thinking off the top of my head here...check to make sure that your brake line brackets in the driver's side wheel well are snug and are not pinching/bending your brake lines. I could possibly see an ABS-like pulse if your lines are not secure...pressure applied to an unsecured line causing it to jump and shake maybe?
