Subject: Steering pop after body lift IP: Logged
Message: So, the joint that the steering extension fits into is starting to pop badly when you wiggle or turn the steering wheel, only 1 month after I had my body lift installed. When I press on the joint, the popping stops. Would the steering extension cause that joint to go bad? What exactly is that called so I can look to have it replaced. I imagine this is gonna be expensive.
Advice?

Message: Just put in the 3 inch PA body lift; having the same problem. Power steering pump sounds loud also, may be going bad?

Message: Hey RJE, I have an appt with the dealer on Wed to look at it and I'm gonna try to make it out to another off road shop that does alot of lifts to have them look at it tomorrow, to make sure the steering extension is properly installed.
I now know the part in question is the intermediate steering shaft U joint, but as far as I can tell, you have to buy the whole assembly to replace it, you cannot just swap out the U joint. I cannot locate an aftermarket manufacturer for the Dakota (there are for the Ram), so I'll be at the mercy of Dodge for a replacement. I'm sure it'll hit the wallet very hard.
I'll let ya know what more I find out...

Message: Yeah, let me know how it turns out. I am also thinking it may just be binding at the pivot points and may just need a good grease job.

Message: Bring your vin# with you. It looks like their is two different ones depending on line code. Both run right around $160.00 --Ouch--
I think th part numbers are either 55351244AA
Or 55351246AA depending on line code.
Hope this helps.

Message: RJE - Truck is all fixed. Turned out to be super simple. It wasn't the U-joint after all. It was simply that the bolt wasn't as tight as it could have been where the extension fits into the top of the U-joint. So the extension was slightly slipping and causing my "popping" or more accurately, my "knocking" noise. So the fix was more torque on the bolt and some locktight to keep it in place and that was all. Not a sound from the steering now.
Stubbs - Thanks for posting that info. Luckily I don't need it!
