Subject: body lift advice time

Message:
I've heard some people say that putting on the body lifts isn't as hard as it is time consuming...and others say it was hard and that is what made it time consuming..

I am 18, have some experience doing work on trucks (mostly my first truck, an 89 Dodge Dakota), and am in college now. I talked with a local off-road store and they have a body lift kit for my 2wd 99 Dakota CC, but it is expensive to have them do it. I figure I will go the cheaper way and put it on myself........ So your advice (people who have put their body lifts on themselves)... should I really do it myself? Are the instructions pretty clear and easy to understand? Any major tools that would help the job task? Plus I don't know anyone who has worked on body lifts before, so will having a novice to putting on lifts like me, helping me, be ok? Thanks for any advice

You can do it. Instructions aren't that clear, so best you know your way around the underside of a truck pretty well. If you have plenty of time (no special tools needed but an air wrench would save you bloody knuckles) and are in no rush to get it done. Probably would take you all weekend.
I'd drop it off at a shop to get it done and pick it up next day. Around here the install is about 200 bucks and it's worth it to me.

Thanks for the advice. I'd love to drop it off and get it back, but the place would sell the kit to me for $269 and then with tax and the labor added on, it would be around $600 total..... now if I could find a place that would either sell me the kit for under $200 or let me buy the kit and take it to them (I can get the kit off the net for under $200) and then only charge me $200 for the install, I'd take it to them.. My mother wants to get me this kit so I can get good tires for the snow (being from Texas and now in Nebraska, this snow stuff scares me) and I want to be able to save her as money as I can with this. Thanks for the advice though, I will look around at local shops again

All the shops should do the install if you already have the kit. All the ones around here will, and it ends up cheaper for you. Yeah, you can get the kit for $200. Check the shops again and tell them you already have the kit. Try the smaller off road shops for a better price. You CAN do it yourself. I'm not trying to convince you not to. Just didn't think it was worth my time when I did it. I hadn't ever put one on before and it took me 2 days and some headaches.

Just wanna say too that you'll save yourself about 350 bucks doing it yourself and that's alot of money. So if you have time and not much cash you should do it yourself. Just take your time and make sure you do everything you should. Easy to miss some things.

BUT, if you have a little extra cash and just want to get it done, have a shop do it. Plus they will give you a warranty if anything screws up.

Definitely install it yourself (or with a friend). One tool that would save some time is a "hot knife" or dremel like tool that you could trim the fan shroud without taking it out.

Hey CC, I found another shop in town and they can get me my lift and put it on all for $389. Now if that is not a deal, I dunno what is. Thanks for the advice to keep looking.
