Subject: NEED HELP!!!! 3'' lift on 98 dakota 4x4

Message:
Im wanting to put a 3" lift on my 1998 Dodge Dakota v6 slt 4x4,I have been reading and it seems that more people prefer the body lift over the suspension lift, i have absolutely no idea what the difference is and i have no idea what all I will need? I found a body lift for my truck for $200 on the net, i dont know is that all i need? Do i need to buy a body lift and anything else at all? or does the body lift provide everything i will need to raise my truck 3" successfully. Is a body lift something me and my dad could do or is it something i need to pay $500 to have installed?? If I would raise my truck 3" then what size tires and rims should I get,(I am wanting wide tires but nothing huge) and is there anyplace I can get wheels and tires a lil cheeper???
If there is anything i need to know, any special tools or any tips before i try to install a lift kit please tell me...
Thanks

it's easy me and my brother in law put a body lift on my 2001 quad cab a few weeks ago... it took about 5 hours and a 12 pack but it was worth it... it looks good i am still running 31 x 10.50's but want 33 x 12.50's soon... you don't need any special tools i have a impack gun which made it a lot easier... but all in all it was real simple... good luck!!

A body lift raises the height at which the body of the truck sits on the frame. Back when, we always used to razz the body lifters for using hockey pucks as spacers.

A suspension lift replaces or modifies the suspension of the truck -- springs, leaves, shocks and whatever else. Plus you usually have to modify the steering components to accomodate the lift.

A body lift kit goes for around $300. You and a friend can do it in a day.

A suspension lift kit goes for around $1200. You will need several specialized tools; professional installs are usually recommended.

My personal opinion is that body lifts are cheese. You can see the gap between the body and frame when you look in the wheel well. Sometimes people don't even bother to adjust their bumpers, so there's a gap there, too. Plus it raises the center of gravity of the vehicle, decreasing its safety and driveability. Finally, it's just for looks. It doesn't make your truck any better at off-roading. It just allows you to put bigger tires. On the other hand, suspension lifts are awfully expensive!

we installed a 3 in Body lift on my 97 Dakota and it was fairly simple . It allowed me to put on 32x11.50's and the 318 still begs for more tires so next step is a 5.5 suspension lift.

Well said Jimmy! I put a body lift on my 97 and run 33's. Next year it's the 5.5 lift and 37's. I am so looking forward to it! Luckily, two guys I kinda know through work race monster trucks, so I beleive I'll let them do the lift. They are even trying to get me a good deal through one of their sponsors.

TRUCK IT UP!

Matt, I had the same problem with the plastic shroud. It won't hurt anything by not putting it back on, just doesn't look good (in my opinion). I made a skid plate out of aluminum diamondplate to cover up the frame showing. Pretty easy to do.

I have a 98Dakota xcab and it has 3"body lift and 3"
torsion keys with blocks in the back. I bought it
this way but who ever did it cranked the keys up all
the way and the front end has been a nightmare. I
put new upper control arms on 3 months ago and just
seen today that they are cracked in the middle and
the passenger side shock was broke in half from
control arm hitting it. Iam going to un crank the
torsion bars a few inches to see if it helps but has
anyone had this prob and where can I get tube
control arms for a 4wd . I found them for 2wd crazy
but not my 4wd. Now I need to replace control arms
again I welded the cracks till my new stock ones
come but I don't want.t this to happen again. And I
don't even take it off-road its a road truck.
