I was thinking of buying this vehicle, as listed in the subject line. It is a 1999 dakota sport, with a V8 (5.2) 48k miles excellent condition, 4x4 crew cab for a bit over $12,000 can anyone give me some recommendations, or warnings. I have heard of a history of mechanical problems, and I would rather ask here, where I assume the most knowledgable, and up to date people are.

Any postings to either assure me, or prevent me from a mistake would be very very appreciated.

If I could do it all over again. I would not have bought a Dakota. Poor reliability and massive depreciation. I just wanted the V8 in a smaller truck. Big mistake. I have had lots of tranny and rear diff problems and front suspension problems. All before 34K. When the warranty is up, I'm gonna dump it for whatever I can get.
This is just my personal opinion. I have an 01 4.7.

One more thing. You will get better objective responses from Consumer Reports and places like that. Check edmunds reliability reports and other automotive research places. Most people on this board like their Dakotas or they wouldn't be on this website. I come here for repair help. That's all I have to say.

i have that exact same truck and it has been running fine. i have had it for a year and i love it. i will be honest... i have tore the sh!t out of it from off roading and from on roading and it still has held up. i have put minor damage to it but it was all my fault. its actually going into the shop tmr to get the rear axle rebuilt but that would be driver error (it sat in a pond for a few days half way under water) so none of it is Dodge's fault.

i dont know what happened to "my opinion's" truck after only 34k miles but i got mine at 65k and nothing is wrong. i think hes not telling us something or something cuz i doubt all that crap just happened. anyway buy what u like, treat it good, and take care of it and it will be fine.

oh yea and my dak with a V-8 4x4 climbs hills better than any truck ive seen. it beats the hell outta my friends new chevy with a 9 inch lift!

According to the dealer and all the work orders I have, my trucks problems have all been "manufacturing defects" and repaired under warranty. Like I said, find an unbiased place to do your research Eric. And 99DakWheeler, don't assume things cause it makes you look foolish.

I have a '97 Ext Cab 4x4 Sport with the 5.2 V8 with absolutely no problems and almost 87,000 miles. My dad has a '99 Ext Cab 4x4 SLT with the 5.2, and so far he has had quite a few problems (intake manifold gasket, CV Joints are the most common) and he has less than 50,000 miles. So I think that it all depends on the truck you either love it or hate. I love mine and have recommended them to three people that have bought it and hated it. I guess it's just kind of a gamble but that's not a good way to buy a truck.

I have a '98 cc 4x4 with a 318 that I baught new. It has 109,000 miles on it and I have not had any problems at all. I drive it on the highway mostly during the summer but do a fair amount of off roading during hunting season. If you drive it and it doesn't have any thing you notice wrong with it it should be OK. That is very low mileage for a four year old vehicle.

I bought a '98 CC 4x4 Sport with the 5.2 and 5 speed in May. Watch out for heavy engine pinging. With the AC on, put it under a load like going up a hill at a slow speed, 20-30 MPH, and then give it the gas and see if you get a lot of pinging. If you do, then take off the air hat and look down through the throttle body with a flashlight and see if there is a thin coating of oil at the bottom on the phlenum pan. If you see oil, make the dealer replace the phlenum pan gasket as it is blown out. This is a very common problem with the 318. I heard that many of the auto transmissions had problems so that is why I got a manual, plus I like to shift. Eventhough I had to replace the gasket myself, I am happy with my Dakota because it is what I wanted, midsize 4x4 truck with a extended cab.

I bought a 99 Dakota Sport 4x4 Ext cab v8 5.9L in April. So far I've had only a squeaky belt which I plan to replace this weekend (THANKS FORUMS!!). It had about 61K miles when I bought it. I offered $12K to the dealership with a $4K down payment and they took it, no questions asked. That's in NC, and you are looking at 48K miles vs my 61K, and a crew cab vs. my ext cab, and a 5.2L vs. my 5.9 L... so with the economy still not good, maybe you could get them down to $12K or even $11.5K?
Nate
