Message: Dude,
Unless you have new info, the only co. making a suspension lift is Trailmaster 4"(yes you cut one crossmember). With a 3" body lift, your 33x 12.50's will clear as long as your vehicle is empty of other passengers and cargo AND you don't do any off-roading(or going into parking lots - especially, if you have off-set wheels). Add a 4" suspension lift and you might just be okay.

Message: Rim back spacing will have a great deal to do with it. I have a 3" body lift, 4" suspension lift and cranked torsion bars and my 33x14.5 Mickey Thompsons will rub slightly when off-road. I do however have them mounter on 15x10 rims with 3-3/4" backspacing. With just a body lift and cranked bars, I was getting slight rubbing with 31x10.50s mounted on 15x8 rims. I have heard of people using 33's with just a body lift, but the rims were close to stock.

Message: Jason, Walt is the man when it comes to documenting lifting. Go to his web site. it explains all the lifts, body, suspension, torsion, engine swap, and some other stuff. Check it out man, its great.
Unless your a mechanic and have good tools, have a shop to the suspension lifts. You dont want something to fall off right in the middle of a raod trip or something. Not cool...
Walt, whats you addres aggain. It is saved into my favroits menu and I dont have the address wrote down. Thanks.
Jason, good luck.

Message: I'm reposting this because this question comes up frequently and I can't locate to original post.
How a tire fits is based upon a few of different measurements. Everyone looks at the overall tire height when selecting tires but tire width; rim width and offset (backspacing) also play into the equation. When you change one of those measurements, you change the geometry of the wheel’s movement within the wheel well. As you decrease a rims backspacing, you increase the amount of lateral movement that is required for that wheel to pivot when turning. A good example is this image here. Click it to view it larger.
This is a scale drawing of a 31x10.50 tire from above. A 31” tire needs about 32” of space to pivot +/- 20 degrees if the pivot point is aligned with the centerline of the tire. Move that pivot point towards the inside edge of the rim 25%(2½”) and the same tire now needs about 34” to pivot the same +/- 20 degrees. Same hold true for both tire and rim width, as you increase the width, the more room is required for it to pivot. If you switch to a rim 2” wider than the existing rims, you have effectively moved the inside sidewall of the wheel in an inch which is equivalent to decreasing the backspacing an inch. You have to look at it as a math equation.
To answer you original question, assuming you have a stock height 94, 4x4, if the backspacing of the new rims are equal to the backspacing of the stock rims you are replacing, you’re basically moved the outside sidewalls out about an inch with the new rims. You may or may not have some slight rubbing (full lock/compression) but it would be close. I ran 31x10.50/R15 tires on 8” rims with 3 ½“ backspacing on my ’88 with a 3” body lift. I got some slight rubbing on the fenders (full lock/compression) but the rims had less backspacing that the stock rims I replaced. I’ve seen 31’s on stock rims not rub with just cranking the torsion bars.

Message: ben...
im runnin 31x10.5s BFG AT's on my 87 4x4 dak.
ok heres the deal.. the torsion bars are maxed out. the rear of the front fenders is trimmed but you cannot even notice it. the rims are 15x8s with 5" back spacing. there is NO body lift. nothin rubs at all and i 4 wheel alot.
http://www.sounddomain.com/memberpage/605315 take a look for yourself
its very feasible to run 31s on a gen I or II.
my future plans call for a 3" body lift and 33x12.5 super swampers...

Message: Ben,
What’s the backspacing on the 15x8 rims you bought? To measure the backspacing lay the rim face down on the ground and place a straight edge across the back of the rim passing over the center. With a tape measure, measure the distance between the mounting pad (the flat round area in the center with the holes for the studs) and the straight edge across the rim. That measurement is the backspacing. Steve pointed out that he had a 5” backspacing, which is close to the stock rims that originally came on his truck. As he stated, he’s not rubbing with 31x10.50 tires but I can assure you if he had those same 31x10.50 tires on a 15x8 rim with a 3” backspacing, he would be rubbing. Like wise if he went to a 15x10 rim with a 5” backspacing or even worse with a 15x10 rim with a 3” backspacing. The difference between a 15x8 rim with a 5” backspacing and one with a 3” backspacing is while both rims are the same size, the one with the 3” backspacing will stick out of the wheel well 2” further than the other.

Message: I don't recall what the stock backspace is but I want to say it’s 5”. You’re right in the ballpark and should be able to get away with those rims with little problem. All I can say at this point is go for it and let us know how it works.
Good luck,

walt, ya hit the nail on the head as usual. stock rims on mine were 15x7s with 5" of b.s.
ben, max out your torsion bars and you may have to trim the back corner of your fender. to make a lil extra flex room on mine i pounded the inner fenders in a little bit to make the wheel wells bigger. and trimmed the lower portion of the rear fender well where the cab mounts is on the frame.... ill get you some pics if you want to see... good luck with it an lets hear how it comes out.
ask more question, ill answer em.

Don't worry about the money thing. It will come as you need it not want it. Your truck is really lookin good, so be proud and hang in there.
I'll send more pictures as soon as it stops rainin here. I got tired of tires throwing mud up on side windows so I broke down and put on fender flairs. I opened bottom of front fenders up 3"(2" past mounting bolt, and welded in new metal) and have more room with the 35s than I had with the 33s.
Oops, sorry this is so long but these trucks are a kick to modify.
