both upper ball joint are bad on my 02 Dak with only 27,000 miles. I noticed them when I took off the crappy factory brake pads and put on a set of lifetime raybestes pads, wow what A difference that made. But anyways I'm a pretty Pissed off Dakota owner right now, but still love my truck.
Any input would be greatly apprciated, Thanks

What do you need to look for to know whether you have bad ball joints or not? I have a 2000 4x4 QC with a 3" body lift and 33" tires and am concerned because of all the problems that other people are having. Any help or some pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, ~Tracy

Tracy H,

You have good reason to be concerned.

To check the ball joints. Lift each side, one at a time is fine, by the control arm. This takes the weight off the ball joints. Then you try and move the tire from side to side and up and down. You are looking for play in the tire. If it wiggles you have a problem. You may need someone to help if you do so you can look at the ball joints and determine which one is bad. Upper or lower. Also a visual inspection might show the rubber boot cracked or something like I had.

Mine never failed but the rubber boot cracked and mud and stuff got in there so I put on some MOOG's for the 99's.

I just had a wheel alignment after the 33" tires and new brakes pads and rotors before that. These were both done a couple of months ago by a well respected mechanic shop. Wouldn't a ball joint problem shown up during the alignment or brake job? Thanks again for any input.

If the alignment does not hold then you may have cause to have them checked.

You would think they would but not always.

Just make sure you keep on it.

Make sure you are always moving when turning the wheels. Less stress on everything.

to check the ball joints jack the truck up by the lower control arm so the susp. is loaded stick a pry bar between the ground and the tire then pull up on it if you feel play and see the tire move and hear a clunk on of the ball joints are bad ive gone through 2 sets of lowers in 80000 miles
