Subject: Q 4 forexfour IP: Logged
Message: I just had my 2k Durango lifted with the Rancho kit. After I got home and began checking out the installation and I noticed that the dust cover that goes from the front half shaft to the new steering knuckle does not seat all the way like it used too. Apparantly this is because of the new spacer that goes on the shaft. I took a look at your photos but could not see if yours turned out this way also. Even though the bearings are a sealed bearing I still dont like that 1/4" gap between the dust cover and my steering knuckle because it leaves my bearing more exposed to dust dirt and muck. Is yours that way too?
As a side note, Im going to have to get new wheels now because the stock 15x8 with 5.5 backspace hit's my steering arm when I try and turn all the way. Need to find some 16 inch rims with 4.75 to 5 BS, that should allow some 33's w/o triming or rubbage.

I also updated the page to show the current photo's from today 8-17-03.
After Add A Leaf added and the new PIAA 6" 520 lights.
It also has some good comparison photos of before and after the lift for front cleance with 33's on.
I then have the before and after lift to add a leafs photo's to show that difference.

Message: That is exactly where I was talking about. In the photo labled "closer view 8-17-03" observe the cv joint rubber dust boot. Move towards the wheel, the rubber boot connects to a cylindrical cone type thing. On the OEM steering knuckle's, the end of the metal cone, which I call a dust cover, was slightly recessed into the steering knuckle, effectively covering the bearing.
Looking at your photo's it looks like yours has that space as well. Hmmm. IMHO that's a design oversight. I would have gladly paid and extra few $$ to have new ones in the kit that fit EXACTLY like the OEM's.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out with this. I check your site frequently to see whats new. I will keep watching to see how you like the add a leaf.

I checked out my co-workers Stock 4x4 Dakota and His looks to be the same as mine. Actually the new Spindles look Thicker and the seal I think you are talking about is still the same but looks to be recessed in further than on stock.
All in all it really looks to be the same.

Message: Interesting. I checked a few vehicles with similar front wheel drive config. (not Dak's) and every single one had the metal cone flush with bearing just like my Durango had b4 lift kit, or slightly recessed in the steering knuckle. So tell wise owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? And while your at it, should the metal cone be flush, or have a space? The world may never know.

I really only checked the seal at the bearing looking the same.

Message: Well I do see what you are talking about. .25" space between the end of the cone and the bearing. The CV cone looks to be sealed to prevent anything from going in the CV joint. I think the seal on the bearing is still good enough to prevent premature bearing failure. I will monitior this especially when Mudd season starts. I frequently rotate tires and such so one more thing to check after each trip is not a problem.

Message: I was thinking about getting another CV joint boot and a clamp, shortnining the boot and installing it so it extends to the bearing. This will add some protection to the bearing. Could probably save money by purchasing cv boots for a vw bug instead of Dodge.
When I get something put together I will let you know what I did, if your interested.
