Subject: Durango 3" body lift w33" Ride stiff?
IP: Logged

Message:
Shooting for 3" body lift and 33" 12.5's on stock 16x8 rims.

1. Somebody told me this might look nice, but that the cornering would lean and the ride stiff. Can anybody describe the ride after doing this?

2. What is backspacing, is it cranking the nut on the torsion bars? What does that do? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but even my friend who is a hard core 4-wheeler/diesel mechanic does not know what this means. Different terminology maybe?

Thanks for any info.

I just put a 3 inch PA lift on my Dakota regular cab and 33" MTR's. To me, though I know a durango is a little different, it rides a lot better. I would reccomend buying new shocks, because your stock shocks suck. I got Pro Comp ES9000 and they feel great. I would also definetly get GY MTR's but there is a lot of good tires. All in all, it will look a lot better.

As far as backspacing goes, I can try to explain, but someone else could probably do it better. Backspacing is the distance from the center of the wheel(where you bolt on) to the back of the wheel. The smaller the backspacing, the farther out the tire will stick, vice versa.

D-dude - as far as the ride is concerned I would have to agree w/ gavin. You should replace the OE shocks. I put the Rancho RSX's on my 2000 Durango and love them. They make the ride alot better (little firmer & alot more stable). As far as the tire size I didn't really notice a big difference in that when I went from 33x10.5 to 33x12.5. My new wheels have a 3.25" backspacing and the 33x12.5 do rub, but i had to do some trimming. With more backspacing (4.0") you may not have to, but the trouble is finding our bolt pattern w/ that backspacing unless you want to go custom. With the OE wheels (5.5" backspacing) there is a good chance the 33x12.5 tire will rub on the frame at full lock.

I saw a truck in one of these threads with 33" 12.5's on stock rims 8", 3" body lift.

So 5.5 backspacing means further out away from the frame than 3.5, or do I have that backwards?

Thanks

Yes Todd you have it backwards. BS of 5.5 will be tucked in the wheel well more than a BS of 3.25".

33x12.5x15 will rub at full lock with the PA 3" body lift and stock BS.

Change the BS to 3.25" and you will change the turn radius of the tire preventing Frame rub with 33x12.5x15 but you now have a fender rub problem.

I say a full turn frame rub is better than a fender rub and especially if you off road and articulate, flex them.

Like Cop said 4" of BS would be best or 4.5 but you have to find some rims first then like them.

Never late for a Tee time or wheelin with my buddies! Always ready for both!!!

todd, you have that backward. this means the center of the rim is 5.5" from the rear edge of the rim, or the edge closest to the truck. the higher the number the deeper the wheel will sit in the wheel well, and closer to the frame. lots of this can be a trial an error situation. also with an 8" lift, everything is going to be different.

Appreciate it.

A lot to think about when you venture into this stuff. I am not hard core yet, I just want to be able to kinda' keep up with my buddies Toy's and Cherokees. Durangos are so long they bottom out pretty easily.

I have a 3" body lift on my 00 QC and the cornering is not that much different, but cranking the torsion bars to level out the truck and give me another 1.5" of clearance in the front did stiffen the ride. I really didn't notice that the lift changed the stiffness at all. I've yet to replace the shocks, but I'm sure that it would help the ride be less rough. Even with all that, I still has to trim a little bit of the front valance and plastic wheel well shield. Although my wheel backspacing is a good 1.5" less than stock ... the wheels stick out that much more. I'm fairly certain that gps_jetskier put 33x12.5 tires on his stock 16x8 wheels and didn't have a problem. I think he has an 02 QC, so you might want to look him up on here. You can check out my pics to help give you an idea what it will look like with the lift and tires.

Anyone interested in buying four BRAND NEW Goodyear Wrangler MTR's? They are size 285.75 R16 (equivalent to a 33x11.50) and have not been used at all.

(if you want) The tires also come with four brand new 16x8 factory wheels from Dodge. These rims are in flawless condition as well.

I am selling this package because I have to trade my Dakota in for a car, and I don't really plan on fitting 33 inch tires on it. So take advantage of this deal because I intend to sell them at a bargain price. If you are interested please email me with questions/comments and I would be more than happy to reply. More pictures are available as well.
