Subject: Few body lift questions IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone tell me the tools needed to do a body lift? Do i have to do any welding or metal cutting when i put my body lift on? or is it strictly bolt on? I read somewhere that you have to weld in a 3 inch extension to your 4x4 shifter. and that getting the old steering rod out is tough, and getting the new longer one in is even tougher. Will a fairly inexperienced wrencher like myself be able to tackle a body lift with the help of my friend(who works at 2 auto repair shops) and his boss?I hope we can cuz i really dont wanna pay someone and arm and a leg to have it installed. thanx

Message: My body lift was the first project I had tried on my dakota. I have a 2wd so I don't know about the 4wd extension. I do have a manual and all I did was bend the shifter back. I don't think that will help you with your 4wd problem though. The lift was a breeze and should be easy for you. The steering extension was fairly difficult, just bothersome and time-consuming. But you might have some luck and it be easy. Tools that would help are metric and standard sockets. Try to use power tools if you can, but some of the spots are tight. Anyway, you should do fine.
Good Luck.

Message: I put a 3" body lift on mine with no problems. The hardest part for me was trying to figure out the front bumper. As far as special tools you should just need a large set of sockets and wrenches, an allen wrench set and a set of star headed wrenches. I've heard that the steering extension can be a pain, but mine went in right away on the first try. The 4wd shifter extension does require welding if you follow the directions, but if you look back through some old postings you'll find a lot of guys who used a connecting nut and a 3" piece of all-thread to accomadate the difference. That's what I did and I've had no problems. It's worth the money you save doing it yourself.
