Subject: New 33" GY's out of balance?
IP: Logged

Message:
OK. Got into the truck this morning for work and started driving down the road. The back of the truck is vibrating. You can see the bed bouncing. One tire in the back has 4.5 onces on it and on the oposite corner inside it has 3.5 onces. Is this right? How much weight is too much weight? Could a new tire flat spot over night? After driving a while they seem to be considerably better. Should I trade in my Good Year AT/S's for some BFG's instead?

No flat spots on radials, probably tires weren't balanced correctly, rebalance.

I'll take them back this weekend I guess. Could they balance correctly, but still out of round? (runout?) Somethings funny. Anyone know if the 4.5 onces is funny? Seems like alot to me....

You may have a problem with the tires being "out of round". No tires are perfectly round, but it's amplified the larger the tire is. They actually have a cutting machine they can put the tire on to round it out. This is mostly a problem on tires over 35", but it may be a possibility.

It's not the rim unless they did something to it putting the new tire on it. The old set were more then fine. They only had 27,000 on them. I just wanted to match the body lift with bigger tires.I'm not having them cut down brand new tires and shave miles off them to balance them. I'll see about putting BFG's on them instead if that's the case. 200 miles and I already have issues....jezzz....

If you take them back and have them rebalanced ask them about road force balancing. A road force balancer can tell yuo exactly how to match the tire to the wheel. If your 285/75/R16 are 8 ply that might be to mutch for your dak. Truing the tire is not the right fix there could be a problem w/ the casing. I have BFG A/T and they ride great. best of luck.

Good call Matt. That's just what we did. All three were out of balance. Some just 1/4 oz, one with 3/4oz and one they end tried to add even more weight to. It already had the 4.5oz I was talking about. I said no. They got a different tire - same thing. Excessive raod force. We went through mounting and dismounting 4 tires. The last one was ok and only needed 2oz on both sides. I'm ok for now. When they'd spin them you could see the tires were out of round. You could see that the beads were not sitting right on the rim. We checked the rim first of course. They were ok. Don't know what you tell ya....no more AT/S's for me. Going to go back to BFG's I think after this.

Well, here I am on Wednesday. four days after rebalancing and replacing the one tire. They are now vibrating again. They won't stay balanced. The tire guy says they have spells of bad ATS's in 285 only. The 305's seem to be fine. I asked about taking the ATS's off and putting BFG AT's on. Am I going to be happy with them? Are they worth the extra $60? Let me know your thougths.

Well here's the scoop. I took the tires back last night. They were out of balance again. They took them off and mounted BFG's. One tire only took .25 once of weight. I can see from the balancing that these are going to be MUCH better tires. Although...they are louder and pick up stones more. For waht it's worth boyz....don't get Good Year ATS's....
