Subject: solid axle swap IP: Logged
Message: I've been wanting to do a solid axle forabout 1.5 years now and have some questions and ideas. What axleshould I use for the front? What is the difference in regular axels and reverse cut? Which do I need. The basic plan here is to weld a plate to the bottom of the frame rail and put some gussets to reinforce it. Then use a spring cup on the bottom of the plate and on top of the axel. Then weld some brackets to the axel and frame for my trailing arms. Seems pretty easy and should lift the truck at least 24". The tricky part will be the steering but I'll come up with that once the rest is fabbed up. My biggest question is what vehicle will be the easiest to find an axle in? Keep in mind I'm going to be clearing 44's easily so strenght will be a concern.

Message: go with a late 70's F-250 that way you get a dana 60 and the reverse cut. which means the pumkin is on the driver's side. i'm doing a 92 right now. using a dana 44 out of an F-150. plus a 3" body lift. clearing 35". not to sure how you plan on getting 24" lift. i will only get around 11-12" of really sup. lift. plus 3-4" more thanks to the tires.

Message: Ok understand the axle part that was pretty simple. As for the lift, I can use any coil spring I want. I can have them custom made by eaton springs or any other company that makes springs. The longer the spring the higher the truck would be. Think about trucks with coil springs in the front. They always have a large bracket/cup mounted to the side of the frame that extends way up into the fender well. Now imagine taking the top of the spring and moving it to the bottom of the frame rail...

Message: good luck with the front driveshaft. the angle on that will kill the transfer case. not to mention the stearing, good luck can't wait to see it when it's done
