Subject: Gears - Please Explain IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have posted a few times now, and can't seem to get a comlete answer. I have installed a 3" body lift, and Pro-Comp 305 70R16s on my 97 Dak. 3.9L 4x4. I have changed nothing with the gears. Do I need to? I assume I have the stock 3.55s? I haven't cranked my torsion bars yet, and I get some rub on the inside fender well, but that's it. Some people have said I need to get a suspension lift as well, others say no. So, I guess this is a 2 part question. Do I need more lift to run those tires, and do I need to change the gears also? I did have some problems getting up to higher speeds on the highway. I don't do much off-roading, none really. My odometer and speedometer are off as well. What else do I need to do?

Message: Ok Mike, here goes...
With the 3.9L and 3.55 gears you should really think abut upgrading the gears to something more like 4.10s. I have a 2002 4X4 with the 3.9L and 3.93 and i run 285/75/16 and they feel really sluggish, and i'm doing a gearing upgrade to restore and gain more power. If you feel a little sluggish or the engine seems to be working over time to turn thoes tires, upgrade teh gears.
As far as a suspension lift goes, you should need one to run those tires, but if you aren't rubbing much and if you don't off-road, then don't worry about it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!! I mean, it's totally up to you and how bad your tires rub.
And as far as knowing what gears you have in the diffs, you can look in your glove compartment at a sticker in it and it will say, or the sticker on the rear axle will say too.
