Subject: Straight axle steering question IP: Logged
Message: For anyone who has or is planning a straight axle conversion, how are you adapting your Dakota's steering?
I have a 93 2wd Dak with rack and pinion steering. I will be probably be using Dana 60s front and rear off a 78 F250 and using the Fords leaf springs. Should I get a steering box from a 4x4 Dak? Or use the Fords? Or something else?
Thanks

Message: For mine (1998) we used the stock box but put a TJ drop pitman arm on it. We went with a hi-steer on the passenger side so to eliminate the bump steer. Haven't driven it around yet as the steering arm is too long and I am waiting for it to be shortened. I plan on having a whole lot of pictures in the next week or two. I have a Dana 44 from a 79 Bronco if that helps too.

Message: papa smurf,
What was involved in the hi-steer for your D44? Is is something I can do at home with maybe a trip or two to the machine shop?
I'm putting a '79 F-150 Dana44 into my '95 Dak.

Message: What was done was the machine shop fabed the actual bracket that was bolted on to the knuckle so if you can do that much you are a head of the game. I can send you some pictures (hopefully in the next day or two) but mainly it was i think a 3/16 or 1/4" piece of metal about 1.5" wide and about 6" long and had a notch around the joint. Obviously it was drilled out for the mounting bolts and the steering arm connection. Hope this helps for now...but like i said i will send some pictures as soon as i can.
