Subject: clunking in steering column IP: Logged
Message: Gentlemen, I would appreciate any help you could give. I just recently finished a 3" PA body lift on my 2000 QC. All went pretty well, however, now my steering is very sloppy. I can hear a clunking which seems to be coming from the steering column (inside the truck). Is this something anyone else has experienced, and if so how was it repaired? The steering extention was tightened properly and the bolts are clearing the frame etc. Also, did anyone else have to bend the metal brake line extention to clear the oxygen sensor?

Message: I get that clunk every once in a while. When i go from a stop, it clunks. That's the only time i feel it. Everyone's saying it's from the steering extension, but as for me, i wouldn't know since i didn't take a good look at it yet.

Message: Hey 2000QC, I had the same problem on my 2001 Dakota after I installed my 3" P.A. body lift!!I waited a couple of weeks, until i couldn't take it anymore, then got under my Dakota removed the bolts on the steering shaft extension pushed it up as far as i could and tightened the crap out of it.....problem solved!! Try that, it worked on my Dakota.
Another thing on the brake lines, keep an eye on the line on the drivers side right next to your a-arm mine rubbed up against the a-arm and caused the line to fail.I lost all my fluid off roading going down a steep mountain trail(scary),I suggest inspecting that one,be sure to zip tie all brake lines to so they dont rub,or rattle loose!!!It is very important!!I no longer own my dakota, but after I worked out the bugs ,the lift was great!

Message: Whikota, Thanks for your help. Do you mean to actually move the extension up tight to the steering shaft away from the steering rack? I tried to push all three pieces together tight before I tightened both bolts. I know that it's tight enough. The steering is terrible now, very sloppy. The clunk sounds just like it's coming from inside the steering column inside the truck. Very strange!!

Message: The reason I moved my extension up was because I came to the realization that it was binding somewhere on the extension. So I theorized that the extension was out of alignment with the shaft, and that it was indeed loose, causing the popping sound !!!I also heard the popping sound inside the truck,it was extremely unnerving, and thats when I decided to do what I could!!One thing I forgot to mention, after realigning the shaft extension and tightening it,it stopped the popping and clicking every time I turned the wheel, but when off roading, all the bumps caused it to pop!!only off roading though!!Yes it is a strange thing! I have since then sold my dakota. My new truck.... its a 03 toyota tacoma trd 4x4. Good luck fixing the problem 2000qc,hopefully ive shed a little light on the subject!!!
