Message: This is for all you Gen III 4x4's out there. What are you using for shocks, my factory shocks have about given up and I will be looking for replacements soon. Any reccomendations? Ones to stay away from? Also has anyone used an overlength (2-3") shock with torsion bars cranked up? It seems like if you crank the bars to raise the truck 2" you might need a little added length on your shock....

Message: I have given up on Rancho and waiting for there lift and went and bought new tires. I stayed with the 31's. But now I want to lift it about 2" or so
what or how do you do this with the torsion bars? and how do you do the rear? Also on the shocks I bought the Edelbrock IAS shocks and they work ten times better than Rancho. 2000 Dakota Quad 4x4.

Message: if iam not mistaken, almost every aftermarket offroad shock built now incorperates an extra inch or two of travel in them for stock applications on 4x4 trucks. so cranking your torsion bars in the front or putting 2 in blocks in the back should not be problem. finding a set for a 3inch suspension lift for gen3s is kinda tuff because the aftermarket sucks when it comes to dakotas , durangos which boggles my mind. they look better than any ford or chevy. so unfortunaly your stuck with rancho in anything higher than 3inches. in stock form though dont even bother with the cheap twin tube shocks , ive had them before the suck . go with any quality monotube shock you'll be very pleased you spent the extra 30 or 40 $ per shock. just trying to help

Message: Matt21 - There are numerous threads about cranking up your torsion bars on this board. Basically it involves locating the torsion bar adjuster under your truck (about 2' behind the front wheels), and turning the adjuster so that there is more preload placed on the bar, this raises the front end accordingly. There have been many posts here regarding how far is safe, and the consensus seems to be to adjust the bars according to the factory alignment specs. You could have a dealer/mechanic do this for you or you can just as easily do it yourself, but most here reccomend you do not go too high, (1-1 1/2"). I was able to get about 2" since my bars were set very low from the factory. If you search these boards you will find plenty of information on this subject.

Message: I like the Rancho RSX9000. I had them before the lift and now after. The Bilsteins (sp) work good to but are not adjustable.
I used the recommended shocks from Rancho with a torsion bar crank and a buddy of mine runs stock shocks with the 2" lift blocks in back no problem. The back stock shocks are pretty long.

Message: Over the years and on many diferrent trucks I have used about every brand of shock known to man. I have learned in that time that, all things being somewhat equal, the ride and "feel" of shocks is largely a subjective, individual experience - provided, of course, we are talking about comparing high quality aftermarket shocks, and not Gabriel Red Ryders, for example.
IMHO - for most applications, Bilsteins are the shock to beat - with the Edelbrock IAS monotube an excellent choice. Both offer a firm but never harsh, controlled ride, with excellent damping characteristics.
Call Bilstein or Edelbrock concerning your stock + length requirements.
