Subject: Finally Got it IP: Logged
Message: So I drove to Denver and picked up my body lift today. I cant wait to get home from college to put it on. Pretty excited. Being very broke here at school I have been pretty creative with parts. $8.58 for "DArkFury" grille, and $64 for custom K&N intake. Its fun being resourceful.
One question though. someone mentioned I have to bend my 5spd stick. How do I do that? Any suggestions?

Message: I used a welding/cutting torch to heat up the stick then bend it while it was orange hot. It's a tough job if you don't have the equipment or the know-how. You can probably find a shop that will help you with it for some $$. Just remember it MUST be done before you can drive once the lift is on! At least on mine, the floor-board gets in the way and I couldn't shift! Once that is done, your good to go.

Message: On my 98' 4X4, I had to weld the supplied 3" extension on the transfer case lever (which was supplied) but there was nothing about the shifter lever except to bend it "an inch forward".
Needless to say, I didn't do that. The only problem I have with it is it rubs the left side of the plastic housing in 1st and 2nd gear and has to be "pushed" a little harder than normal to get into these gears.
Eventually I will pull it out and get it done the right way.
Other than that, it works great.
Hope this helps.

Message: You don't have to BEND!! Performance Accessories recommends against it.
Here are a couple of emails I received from Performance Accessories.
The solution as we see it is a 3" x 3/4" rod installed at the bottom of the
>shift lever where it comes vertically out of the tower on top of the
>transmission. The problems have been that some of the installers try to
>heat
>the shift lever and bend it to make it fit and it does not. The idea is
>that
>you want to keep the same relation to the dash and console or seat. So if
>you put a 3" kit on your truck then you must vertically extend the shifter
>3".
The shifter extension is something that will need to be welded. At this
point it will not be included in any old kits but will be added to the new
kits. We could send you an extension if you do not get one in the kit you
purchace.

Message: Crusty, I thought I was going to be bending it just 1/2 an inch or so... turned out I basically had to bend it straight! If you look at it, it is in kind of an "S" form stock, mine is more like a bent "I". If you want I can take pictures of mine this weekend so you can see how it looks. I was very picky on getting it to shift exactly like stock, and it does now!
To take out the shifter:
1)Take out the console
2)unscrew the shifting rod
3)unscrew and take out the floor board rubber seal
4)unscrew the 4 torx bolts holding the shifter plate to the tranny
5)pull out the shifter, carefull not to lose any parts or drip oil in the truck.
6)disasemble the plastic off the shifter (you'll melt it otherwise) and remember the way it all goes back together!
Hope this helps a little.

Message: dkr6811, that sounds like a good idea too. Mine did not come with the rod and I thought about attaching a 3" extender but figured bending would be just as easy. I liked the way mine turned out, but it does take some time. An extender might be easier... dunno? Thanks for the info!

Message: dkr8611,
Just so you know, on the instructions that I recieved with my kit, from Performance Accessories, the directions clearly stated "heat the shifter lever with a torch and BEND lever about an inch forward".
It's nice to see they either changed their directions or don't remember writing that in them. So, the "problem" was that they said to do it in the first place.
Just thought I would point that out to you.
Hope they corrected it since then. But I will pull out my lever and install a 3"x3/4" extension on it now.

Message: There is another way, i just added the 3" body lift and a 2" sus. to my 97 2wd 5 speed dak. (regular cab) with the 318, flowmasters, some 32's and eagle alloys series 117's and yada yada yada. I just (neatly) trimmed the center console plastic away from the shifter and removed the fake leather boot so all thats left now is the rubber one that keeps out water and the stick is lower, but i dont mind that at all. everything works properly and it goes into every gear just as before. just dont look as pretty, but hell, its a truck. I'll add some trim to it later on to pretty it up. if yall'd like to see pics of the installation (after) just send me some mail at dodgeit_97@yahoo.com
happy lifting,
ken
