Subject: tires and rims? IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering what I could get away with if I went with a PA 3" body lift? I currently have the 31" MTR's on stock rims. I am looking at getting the AE 589's. Not sure if I should get 15x8 or 15x10 (or even 16" if they have them). Was hoping to get 33" BFG tires put on the new rims. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Message: I have the PA 3" lift on mine with 15x8 AE 589s and 33x12.50 BFGs. I would stick with the 15x8s because the 15x10s will give you a lot of rubbing problems. And I don't think they make 16" 589s in our bolt pattern, but I'm not 100% sure.

Message: 97_blk_dak, did you have to do any trimming to make that combination work? Any rubbing? I don't have fender flares yet, but will snag some once I get the new tire/rim package. You are correct about the 16" 589s, no matching bolt pattern. Thanks for the advice.
Brian
Nice dak by the way :)

Message: Because of the low backspacing of the 589s (3.25"), the wheels really stick out in the fenderwells. I had to crank my torsion bars up a bit and still do some trimming. I used a dremel tool and slowly cut slight angles on the ends of the fenders in the front. Every now and then, I still rub a little when turning hard and hitting a bump. I would advise trying to find a wheel closer to a 4" backspacing unless you don't mind doing a little cutting. I was a little scared to cut on my Dakota, but I wasn't about to buy another set of wheels. It's really not as noticeable as you would think. I have a good inch and a half cut out of the lower front valance in all my pics and you have to look very closely to see them.

Message: hmmm...thanks for the tip. I don't see where a different offset would help the problem. If the tire is closer to the frame, it will still hit the front valence when turning and possibly the frame. Am I thinking correctly?
thanks,
Brian

Message: The lower the backspacing, the more you will rub the fenders. If you had a backspacing between 4.5" and 4", you probably wouldn't rub. If you go with a 5" or higher, you will rub the frame a little. Atleast that is the way I understand it. 4wDakota seems to be pretty knowledgeable on this stuff so maybe he can clarify it.

Message: do you know anybody running the American Racing 16x8 Baja rims with the 3" lift and 33" tires? The backspacing is 4.5" for those rims, which should work a little better. The look is very similiar to the ae 589 and the cost is close too. Just curious.
Thanks,
Brian
